Obey The Sun – bio:
Obey the Sun are a grunge metal band from Hungary, formed in the music underground in 2020. Hot-blooded, headstrong, and unapologetic; they give us a hard dose of grit and a blast of attitude with massive riffs, thunderous rhythms, raw soulful vocals, and a desert-soaked feel. Obey the Sun are Tamás Orbán-Ducos on vocals, Péter Szmolnik on guitar, Gergő Kelemen on bass, and Krisztián Nagy on drums, and altogether, this bold project creates an atmosphere rich with stoner appeal, sludge undertones, and a heavy groove-vibe we feel in the heart of our nightmares and dreamscapes.
As for the band’s origin story, getting the dynamic right was so painless and uncomplicated, it seemed that the moon was in the seventh house and Jupiter aligned with freakin’ Mars. Krisztián wanted to start something fresh and amazing, and luckily, he and Gergő already knew each other. They found Péter on Facebook. The last link was the instrumentalists meeting their new vocalist, Tamás in a gyro place on a boulevard in the city center. He listened to their “Highlight Mix” and immediately started dissecting themes and writing the lyrics and vocal parts. (Sounds like a movie). After honing their sound, Obey the Sun released their debut EP titled L.I.R.A. in May of 2024. It was a fierce introduction that showcased their unique blend of weight and melody. This release was accompanied by their music video titled “Land of the Dead,” capturing the band’s dark edge and helping to broaden their presence in the European metal scene. As a footnote: to this day the band considers their gig at the Monsters of Mór Outdoor Mini Festival as a pivotal point in their career as live musicians.
In terms of the new EP titled Desert Ritual, Obey the Sun are not shy. They do not play it coy, beat around the bush, or flirt with delicate subtlety. This record is a nuclear burst, a spread of delicious devastation on a worldwide scale, letting loose the wolves, marching the zombies, freeing the witches, and unleashing the bloodsuckers. Get ready for the sky to fall. Prepare for the flood, dig in for the earthquake, and wrap your arms around the tornado. Listeners will find that Tamás treats the vocal like a grand celebration of Oktoberfest as opposed to a taste-test of ritzy fine wine. In other words, he wants to chug, no sipping allowed. Whether he is keeping low on the octave or razzing it rich in the heart of the mid-range, this brand of singing doesn’t come just from the heart and the soul. We’re talking guts. We’re talking bottom of the earth straight up through the spine. As for Péter, his guitar is a freight train, a groove-machine, a lightning rod channeling the band’s rash attitude and evocative undercurrent. Gergő’s bass tracks are fat sonic booms, and Krisztián plays the drums like his hair is on fire.
Desert Ritual was produced, engineered, and mastered by Attila Horváth at ASH Sound Studio, the legacy of the former “Supersize Record Studio.” The album art was created by Péter Szmolnik.
