Mystfall – Embers of A Dying World
Barely a month ago, Mystfall released their second full-length work, “Embers of A Dying World”. It’s not only good, it’s just right and excellent. Mystfall present the metal audience with their own twist to the classic recipe of symphonic power metal, and without a doubt is a properly served work that kindles within it the same flame that defined some of the most notable albums of the genre.
“Whispers in the Tempest” is the definitely not subtle, and shockingly powerful opening act of the album. When the symphonic element meets the power metal genre, the result is nothing but humble. Grand crescendos, epic passages, and the enchanting operatic delivery by Marilena add up to a captivating musical product, that does absolute wonders for the record, since not only sets the tone but also the standards on which the whole is founded on.
“Embers of A Dying World” double down on the powerful beginning, adding growls in contrast to the clean, fay-like Marilena’s vocals, pushing the albums aggression, while adding at the same time Neo-classical lines, underlining the refined and elegant side of the album. Following up, “Guardians of the Earth” focuses more on the power metal aspect, with distinct heavy riffing, that breaks off with the “Nectar and Pain” a beautiful, awe-inspiring and suspenseful orchestral piece, a moment’s rest before we carry on.
“Sleeper in the Abyss”, “Fading Memories” and the third of the row, “Crimson Dawn”, are quite keen on building tension both musically and through the distinct theatricality in the deliverance, whether it is vocal or musical. There is a performative aspect that comes forward that intertwines and blends seemingly with the gothic/victorian-like ideas that are carefully orchestrated, adding a subtle, elegant darker tone to the tracks.
Now on the eighth track, “Cosmic Legends”, Mystfall return to the power/symphonic roots, with epic and grand lines, that will make great openers for the live performances, to heat up the crow.
Just before the end, “Echoes of Arcadia” takes the symphonic/power metal blend, and leads it down to progressive metal paths, while at the same time a more exotic, if you will, aspect is offered, with an “oriental” flavoring at parts. A very distinctive detail that I personally love, because it has this dreamy texture that always cuts through.
The finale could not have been anything less than the “Remnants of Tomorrow”, an epic and grande closing track, that encapsulates both the essence and the musicality of the album, signing off with a blast.
In conclusion, as long as there are bands like Mystfall, the symphonic/power metal genre will keep on blooming, and producing great works. Without a speck of doubt, “Embers of A Dying World” is an album that you should definitely check out in 2026, and if I may add, sooner rather than later.
