KA’APER- When Gods Walked The Earth
Gods, pharaohs, temples, death rituals and the promise of an afterlife have provided fertile ground for countless artists over the years. The problem is that such concepts can easily become little more than an aesthetic backdrop. KA’APER, however, explore mythology through present eyes, gazing outward towards the thematic relations between myth and reality.
On their second full-length album, When Gods Walked The Earth, KA’APER uses the world of Ancient Egypt as a framework for examining themes that remain painfully human: mortality, loss, betrayal, madness, eternity and the fear of the unknown.
KA’APER never allow the record to become unnecessarily bloated, instead delivering a focused collection of melodic death metal songs built around crushing riffs, dark melodies, aggressive vocals and atmospheric arrangements.
The record begins with Amenhotep, a short atmospheric introduction that establishes the mood before the band launches into Of Chaos and Destruction. The transition is deliberately violent. Suddenly, the atmosphere gives way to sharp guitar work, furious vocals and a rhythm section that gives the track a distinctly modern extreme-metal character, both rhythmically and aesthetically. There is melodic death metal at its core, but KA’APER are clearly not interested in recreating the genre’s past. Their approach is heavier, more contemporary and occasionally brushes against deathcore territory.
Pharaoh takes a somewhat darker and heavier route. The riffs feel more deliberate, allowing the atmosphere to become as important as the aggression, with a pulse strong and regal, giving justice to the title. It is one of those tracks where the Egyptian imagery translates to the sound. The guitars create a sense of weight and grandeur, while the vocals maintain the necessary brutality.
The title track, When Gods Walked the Earth is arguably one of the album’s defining moments. It is also the longest composition on the record, giving KA’APER more room to develop their epic side. Rather than relying solely on speed, the band builds the track around melodic hooks, powerful guitar work and a sense of scale. Tracks such as Our Time of Dying and Eternity in Stone reveal a more melodic and atmospheric side of the band, while still retaining the weight.
Eternity in Stone in particular fits beautifully into the album’s conceptual universe. Its imagery of ancient beings, stone and eternity mirrors the band’s fascination with the relationship between mortality and the seemingly endless existence of the gods.
Then comes Lament for Osiris, and this is where When Gods Walked The Earth takes its most interesting detour. Featuring guest vocalist Julia Selikhova, the track is considerably more melodic, slower and emotionally exposed than much of the material surrounding it. Selikhova’s vocals provide the song with a haunting, almost mournful quality, creating a striking contrast with the harsher vocal delivery elsewhere on the record.
A Reason to Go Insane brings the aggression back. With a darker and more threatening character cuts through with an abysmal thrash/death riffing, while After the Gods once again demonstrates the band’s ability to move between heaviness and melody. The album finally closes with Hiding, a song that carries the melo-death breath within.
When Gods Walked The Earth is much more than an album about Ancient Egypt. It is an album about the human fascination with everything that survives us. The pyramids remain, the stones remain, the stories remain—and somewhere between those ancient monuments and the modern distortion KA’APER, a record is created that encapsulates wonders and wanders alike into art, and finally into a great album that you should all need to check out.
