Some albums aim for atmosphere. Others aim for emotion. “Songs From The Veil” manages to achieve both—while rooted deeply in myth, nature, and something far more human beneath the surface.
With their third full-length, AS THE SUN FALLS refine the sonic identity, they introduced in Kaamos and expanded in Pohjoisen Sydän. This time, however, the band reaches further—into Finnish folklore, spiritual symbolism, and existential weight.
At the center of the album lies “As Night Devours,” a track that perfectly encapsulates the record’s essence. It’s not just a single—it’s a statement. The song unfolds with a suffocating stillness before erupting into sweeping melodic passages and relentless riffing, capturing the oppressive beauty of the Nordic night.
What stands out immediately is the album’s narrative cohesion. Themes like the Soulbird, ancient creation myths, and the Fire Fox aren’t treated as decorative elements—they’re woven into the emotional and musical core. The result feels less like a collection of songs and more like a journey through a mythological landscape shaped by memory and loss.
Musically, the band leans heavily into contrast. Tremolo-picked guitars cut through dense atmospheric layers, while slower passages allow melodies to breathe and resonate. The production by Mikael Andersson keeps everything sharp yet organic, avoiding the over-polished sterility that often plagues the genre.
There are moments where the band clearly nods to acts like Insomnium and Omnium Gatherum, particularly in the melancholic lead work and layered compositions. But AS THE SUN FALLS distinguish themselves through their thematic commitment—this is not just northern melancholy, it’s mythological introspection.
Beyond the mythology, the emotional core of the album hits hardest in its quieter, more reflective passages—particularly in what appears to be a deeply personal composition centered on loss. These moments give the album weight, preventing it from drifting into abstraction.
“Songs From The Veil” is immersive, patient, and emotionally resonant. It doesn’t chase immediacy—it rewards attention.
Verdict: A haunting and cohesive work that elevates melodic death metal through mythology, atmosphere, and genuine emotional depth.
