ΩЯRΑ aka ORRA (Progressive Metal – Greece) – Album Review for KICK ASS FOREVER of  “Unbounded” (Self-released on April 14, 2022) #Orra

What do you get if you put 4 experienced and fiercely creative musicians to write an album? Quite a few bands, but for the purposes of this review you get the ORRA and their debut album, “Unbounded”.

Without question, we are talking about one of the most interesting undergrounds records that I have and can be found in the scene, so far in 2022. A complex and multilayered release that drags you into a strange and stunning musical journey.

A unique work from almost every aspect, the “Unbounded” is a progressive and heavy metal fusion eager on experimentation, combining various music genres and eras.  From the 70s progressive rock of King Crimson and the hard rock of Deep Purple to avant-garde elements and influences that remind of the melancholic “Promised Land” era of Queensryche, ORRA aggressively deny to represent and stay in just one genre.

I must confess that at some points and particularly at the opening and closing tracks of the record, the compositions might feel a bit chaotic. Do not abandon hope. It needs just a bit of patience and time. Through the repetitive passages that exist these tracks, they shape their creative chaos that by the end becomes their trademark trait.

If all these sound like a lot of work just to listen to an album, I would suggest starting in an unorthodox way and begin your listening session with the second song, “The Revenant”. This particular track manages to capture everything that ORRA represent musically without the demanding complexity. Dark, atmospheric, groovy and melodic, the “The Revenant” balances between the elements that construct the “Unbounded” and composes the perfect warm up track, if you are unfamiliar with the more experimental and avant-garde concepts.

Would I recommend such a work? Definitely. It takes some time and a bit of patience to get the hang of it but once you do, it will reward you with one of the most unique musical experiences in the progressive metal scene.
