VERITAS – album “Threads of Fatality ” (26 August 2020, Veritas Rocks LLC)
VERITAS is an American Heavy/Power Metal band. The band’s vision is based on the American Heavy/Power metal, but they also incorporate Progressive and Classic Rock influences. “Threads of Fatality” is their debut album and comes out after their self-titled VERITAS EP from 2019.
I’d say that some of their influences should be Fates Warning and Warlord (don’t forget that behind the band’s drums set is Mark Zonder himself!), and then Crimson Glory, Queensryche and early Dream Theater, but also Iron Maiden, Iced Earth (just listen to “Frail”) and of course Judas Priest! Nevertheless, VERITAS seem to also appreciate Rock and Hard Rock music and bands like old Scorpions, Whitesnake, Deep Purple (just listen to “Eyes of the Blind”) and KISS (take a listen to “Love and Burn”, which makes a really nice single).
VERITAS deliver many cool and fresh ideas with their metal approach which sounds rather refreshing for the style. What I mean is that with respect to their classic Heavy/Power Metal roots, VERITAS add in their own ideas offering the album great diversity. So, in “Threads of Fatality” you get to hear Heavy/Power Metal tracks, then Progressive songs or Prog parts within Heavy/Power songs, based on the excellent rhythm section of Geno Alberico and Mark Zonder (like for example on “Far Away” or Dying to Live”), and you also get straight rocking tunes and beautiful ballad/acoustic Hard Rock music (“Say Goodbye”, “Sludge”), something dearly missed from modern productions.
Denny Anthony has a remarkable voice, great singing skills and an overall huge talent. He has a great balance and positioning both on high and low areas. His style varies between Rock and Metal and his voice is very colorful and expressive.
Greg Wenk delivers some solid performances on the guitar, both rhythm and lead, by playing in a simple and effective way throughout the whole album. He has a really great sense of melody and harmony. Greg is also excellent in both writing and performing acoustic/clean guitar parts (for example listen to “Fates Warning” a song that ends up to be a Progressive Metal track).
My standout track of the album would be “Morbid Stale”. In this one VERITAS create mystery, darkness and an occult feeling just like the one found in old American Heavy Metal bands. The song offers a rather creepy and haunting atmosphere.
On “Threads of Fatality” there is a big diversity on the songwriting. Despite its length which is something less than 50 minutes, for sure you won’t get bored. There is a great flow on the CD and the songwriting actually keeps you focused in.
“Starlight” is the first single of the album, and it’s a technical, yet memorable Heavy/Power Metal song.
VERITAS did really well in their debut “Threads of Fatality”. They put themselves for good on the Heavy/Power Metal map. They clearly showed the band’s potential. And after all they gave us an excellent album !
