UFO is one of the most iconic and influential bands in the Hard Rock genre. The band came into the Capitol Theatre in Clearwater, FL recently to wrap up the most current leg of their 50th Anniversary tour, aptly dubbed the LAST ORDERS TOUR. “Last” because lead singer Phil Mogg has stated whenever this tour is over he will retire from touring. The man is 71 years old so who can blame him? LOL! The band had recently had to cancel a few shows because Mogg was ill, but he showed no signs of it at this show!!
Opening the set with the all time classic MOTHER MARY you could just sense this was a special night. I have to admit I was really excited for this show, but also kind of melancholy thinking, is this the last time I see UFO? But that aside, this show was so enjoyable! The band sounded awesome, and the even thought the venue is a “theatre” it has a very intimate vibe, not a bad seat in the house! Mogg was dressed like classy chap, donning a black suit and tie, and an old school hat. Looking a little thinner than his usual self didn’t seem to matter as soon as he started singing it was just amazing! Vinnie Moore, who has been in UFO for a long tenure at this point, really shines in the band. His extended solos are just flat out stellar and impressive! I think ROCK BOTTOM was almost 15 minutes long and not one second was boring. The band also features Andy Parker, long time drummer, Rob De Luca (Spread Eagle) on bass (playing a Gibson Thunderbird a la Pete Way!), and Neil Carter on Keys & Guitar. Neil replaced the recently deceased Paul Raymond. The show was just great, career spanning set list with most of the band iconic songs there to enjoy. For me, TOO HOT TO HANDLE, ONLY YOU CAN ROCK ME and CHERRY were the real highlights. Please enjoy these videos I took, not my best work but the sound is clear so you can enjoy the music, which is most important!!! Thanks to the UFO camp for making this show possible for me – I hope I am able to sample another round of the LAST ORDER before it’s done.
