Bio:
In late 1980 Jeff and bass player mate Dave Strathearn went to see one of Jeff’s old mates Steve McGuire in his band. Chatting after the gig the guys decided to get together and Troyen was born. Troyen were Jeff Baddley – drums, Steve McGuire – Guitar/Vocals, Dave Strathearn – Bass and Nick Cookson – Guitar / Vocals. The decision was soon made to record a demo so the band booked a three day session at Amazon Studios in Liverpool. The engineer for the session was a very young Gil Norton who went on to produce albums for The Foo Fighters, Feeder, Counting Crows and Terrorvision. Four tracks were recorded, ‘Crazy Lady’, ‘Dreams Never Lie’, ‘Don’t Send Me To War’ and ‘Futures Friend’. These tracks were later re recorded adding Neil Treanor on lead vocals in December 1981. The band parted ways at the end of 1982 but not before performing over 130 gigs having supported Spider, Girlschool and Diamond Head amongst others. They also enjoyed a 1982 European support tour with Nightwing. Troyen also had a promise of a contract with Neat records for a three-track single and a possible LP. Rough demos for the single were done, but the band split prior to completion of the single.
In May 2014 Jeff received a Facebook message from one of the guys who ran The Brofest Festivals in Newcastle asking if the band could be put back together to appear at Brofest#3 in February 2015. After numerous emails and phone calls the band met after 32 years in a pub in Warrington. After a couple of beers the four original members decided the gig was on. Soon after the Brofest#3 gig was announced the band started to get enquires from other festivals in UK and Europe and it soon became clear that the re union was going to be for more than one gig. At this point Dave decided that he sadly didn’t have the time to devote to the band’s quickly filling diary and very reluctantly left the band. Dave was replaced by Karl Altdorfer who was playing in BBGM a rock covers band with Jeff and Steve.
To coincide with the Brofest festivals and subsequent gigs the decision was made to self release a new album ‘Finish What You Started’. The album comprised of the four digitally remastered demo tracks from 1981, two new tracks ‘Finish What You Started’ and ‘Backlash’ two old tracks ‘Syrian Lady’ and ‘First Blood’ and a bonus demo track from 1982 ‘Free Wheelin’.
In May 2016 Karl moved on and was replaced on bass by an old school friend of Jeff’s Andy Stephenson. In July 2017 the band self-released a five track EP ‘Storm Child’ to great critical acclaim. There were three new tracks, ‘Storm Child’, Flight Of Fantasy’ and ‘Cheatin’ and re workings of ‘Dreams Never Lie’ and ‘Futures Friend’.
At the end of 2017 Nick decided to leave due to ill health and in early 2018 Steve Haslam joined the band. In January 2019 Mark Nortley replaced Andy Stephenson on bass guitar and in July recorded and self-released and second EP ‘A New Dawn’. In October 2019 Troyen signed with Classic Metal Records to globally release “Anthology 1981-2019”. High Roller Records released a double issue vinyl version in November 2020, “Syrian Lady The Troyen Anthology Part 1 1981-1982” & “Nightmare The Troyen Anthology Part 2 2014 -2019”.
Since reforming Troyen have played at the likes of Drunken Monkey Festival, Heavy Metal Maniacs in The Netherlands, British Steel in France, Mearfest, Grimm Up North, HRH Xmas Rocka at the O2 in Sheffield and Blast From The Past in Belgium. 2020 started with Giants Of Rock in Minehead the only gig before the Global Covid_19 pandemic struck.
As Covid-19 struck the band had planned a new album ‘Falling Off The Edge Of Forever’. Before recording Troyen made the decision to return to a five piece introducing Mark Walling on lead vocals. The album was put together and recorded after many obstacles, trials and tribulations during and in between lock downs.
