There’s so much to tell from that fateful weekend in August when I met Eric Wagner at The Lost Well, just before The Skull were to appear before an enthusiastic crowd of devotees of the band and their predecessor, Trouble. All eyes were on Eric Wagner, who for had become the mournful prophet of doom for the pandemic age. I visited with Eric before the show and couldn’t help feeling like he was just a dour fellow or maybe he was getting himself psyched with some pre-show ritual known only to him. All I know for certain is that conversation was short, curt, and all the while he had that look like, “Who the hell are you and what do you want?” I knew from reputation that this wasn’t Eric in his usual form, though he has always had a kind of aloof quality of the man who has simply seen too much and is left jaded by it. I chalked it up to simple fatigue. This seemed to be confirmed when the band just days later announced they were dropping off future dates in their tour with The Obsessed, ostensibly because of the whole COVID-19 situation in the southern United States. Another post clarified that several members had tested positive for the novel coronavirus and Eric, in particular had developed corona virus disease, the kind that leads to severe and often irreversible pneumonia. Fans were staying positive and prayerful for a recovery, with many believing this Liege of Doom would somehow get through the worst. He died August 22, 2021 at a hospital in Las Vegas at the untimely age of 62. Happily, I was able to document his final show on August 8th, 2021 at The Lost Well in Austin, Texas and it is with great honor that I share the footage with you now, as we say goodbye to one of the most authentic voices of his generation.
