OVERVIEW
THE RODS – “The Rods” (Re-Release)
Label: High Roller Records
Release date: 24.09.2021
Format: LP & CD
Distribution: Soulfood
Heralded by a five-star review in UK music paper “Sounds” in September 1981 (“I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt so enthusiastic about a band’s first studio effort…” wrote reviewer Geoff Barton) THE RODS’ self-titled debut album for Arista Records was greeted enthusiastically, in particular in Britain where the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal was in full swing; and as a result the New York-based three-piece of vocalist/guitarist David ‘Rock’ Feinstein, drummer Carl Canedy and new bassist Garry Bordonaro landed the prestigious support slot on the UK leg of Iron Maiden’s spring 1982 ‘Beast On The Road’ tour.
Possibly one of the most illustrious and exciting albums of the early Eighties, ‘The Rods’ was in essence and stripped down and revitalised version of the band’s self-pressed limited edition ‘Rock Hard’ LP. Dropped from the tracklisting were the Elf cover ‘Sit Down Honey’ and The Young Rascals’ ‘You Better Run’, ‘In Your Panties’ and ‘Getting’ Higher’, and in came two new cover songs: ‘Ace In The Hole’, and ‘Nothing Going On In The City’. Originally recorded by Dutch band White Honey, ‘Nothing Going On In The City’ was a song THE RODS swiftly made their own with their full-on kick-ass interpretation. Held over from the album, ‘Getting Higher’ appeared as the previously unreleased track on the band’s four-track 12” ‘Full Throttle’ EP (alongside album cuts ‘Power Lover’, ‘Nothing Going On In The City’ and ‘Crank It Up’) and has been added as a bonus track to this release.

OVERVIEW
THE RODS – “Wild Dogs” (Re-Release)
Label: High Roller Records
Release date: 24.09.2021
Format: LP & CD
Distribution: Soulfood
With both the full support of the UK music press and the British division of their record label behind them, THE RODS checked into Parkgate Studios, in Battle, Sussex, early in 1982 to record their second LP for Arista, ‘Wild Dogs’.
Although the New York-based power trio of guitarist/vocalist David ‘Rock’ Feinstein, drummer Carl Canedy and bassist Garry Bordonaro were accustomed to doing things themselves, for ‘Wild Dogs’ the label enlisted the support of Martin Pearson who’d also produced the label’s other metal act, Krokus. The result was a slicker-sounding album, and one which spent several weeks in the UK album charts (a first for the band). And although both Feinstein and Canedy would later go on record as saying they would have preferred to have produced themselves again the frontman admits that “‘Wild Dogs’ is one of the most popular albums from the fans’ point of view.”
The vinyl re-issue is augmented by ‘Wings Of Fire’, the non-album B-side to ‘You Keep Me Hangin’ On’, a cover of The Supremes’ 1965 hit which was chosen as the album’s lead single. In addition, the CD also adds a number of live tracks, some of which were recorded at a frenetic headline show at London’s Marquee in March 1982 (which followed the band’s triumphant opening slot on Iron Maiden’s ‘Beast On the Road’ tour), as well as the ‘cleaned up’ promo version of second single ‘Too Hot To Stop’.
