WOW! New music from one of the first bands I got into waaaaay back in the day, THE RODS!!!! The Upstate New York rockers are back at it and I am very happy to report their new album BROTHERHOOD OF METAL is rockin’!!! Shakin’ foundations 37 years later, these guys can still deliver. I love when older bands don’t try to re-invent themselves and just do what they do best, and for THE RODS that means straight ahead, break your teeth, rock n roll, heavy metal!!!!!
Now before we get going there were 2 things that kind of threw me off with the album, but don’t let that deter you, I am really into this album but………the use of keyboards, almost every song(the album opens with a piano intro) and there are Deep Purple-ish hammond keyboards throughout the album in the background. Again, nothing to be alarmed about, I just didn’t expect it. The other thing I kinda missed was all 3 members taking turns singing lead vocals. On Brotherhood Of Metal(BOM) it’s all Rock Feinstein. Now again, this does NOT bring down the album at all, I just wanted to state these 2 factors kind of surprised me, but in NO WAY brought down or hindered my experience of this metal album!!!
So I remember THE RODS as one of the loudest bands I have ever seen. OK, maybe not up there with Manowar and Motorhead, but damn close! So I thought is was really appropriate they had a song called LOUDER THAN LOUD on the album. LOL! THE RODS were always a fun band, pretty basic songs but their individual talent made the simple songs interesting to listen to. They knew who they are song-wise, and playing-wise they were always top notch! Check out the song TYRANT KING! That one has that old school riffing and vocal patterns that made THE RODS a notorious metal monster all those years ago. I mean that song could’ve been on WILD DOGS!!!
Now THE RODS have been staying active, they have released new music over the years, but not as consistently as they did back in the day. Both Carl Canedy(drums) and David ROCK Feinstein have released solo albums, keeping their chops up to form! Gary Bordanaro(bass) displays he still has it with the ultra catchy bass intro to PARTY ALL NIGHT. Another fun track, not re-inventing the wheel, just a fun rock song. Cool breakdown before the solo, as Carl & Gary lay down a quite funky background for Feinstein to solo over before the songs kicks back to rockin’. TONIGHT WE RIDE is another song on BOM that really makes you think of the old days, when metal was metal. Straight ahead, no bullshit, just rock! I also enjoyed the song “1982” a lot!!!!!! Lyrically it’s about the band, “THE RODS were formed in 1982!!” Great chugging riff between the vocal lines, love it!!!! I mean this album doesn’t let up! THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT and EVIL IN ME close out the album in a strong punch to the gut!
So it’s been a long time since Rock, who’s related to Ronnie James Dio(and played in the band ELF with him before Dio became famous), Gary and Carl formed THE RODS and this BOM album shows they need to keep going, make as much new music as they can. I am all aboard, I always have been. I pledge my allegiance to the BROTHERHOOD OF METAL!!!!!!
