THE DRAGONS – play September 21 at Mondo Hollywood, band’s first L.A. show in 14 years #thedragons

August 14, 2019 (San Diego, California) – The Dragons’ reputation as a “bring down the house” whiskey-drenched, street rock’n’roll band is well known. They cut their teeth as a touring band in the early-to-mid-oughts and always delivered triumphant shows at the Garage (RIP) in Los Angeles and explosive shows in San Diego at the Casbah (their dual rock club ‘homes’ in Southern California).
Fans and followers of the band will recognize Mondo Hollywood as just the kind of event The Dragons get together for. Mario Escovedo explains “Rafael Carrera booked The Dragons in the hey-day of The Garage and also for the annual rock’n’roll festival The Las Vegas Shakedown. For the first time in 14 years The Dragons will return to Los Angeles to play with this intense line-up featuring Giuda from Italy and Hammered Satin from Hollywood.”
The Dragons will never stop mourning and honoring their brother in arms, Steve Rodriguez (bass) who passed away suddenly from heart failure in 2015. But as Rodriguez himself would insist “the show must go on.” So Hector Penalosa, from the 1978 punk band The Zeros, plays bass for the band which still features the remaining original line-up. Guitarist Ken Mochikoshi-Horne is now a long-time member of L.A.’s hard rock champs The Bronx and drummer Jarrod Lucas still hammers out sets with various bands in San Diego. Inimitable front man Mario Escovedo (guitar and vocals and also the younger brother of Alejandro Escovedo and Pete Escovedo and uncle to Sheila E.) now engages in mainly off-stage adventures including a recent trip to mainland China to study Kung Fu.

The Dragons began in 1991 in San Diego, California. Three months later, and after playing the first of 11 South By Southwest Music Conference Showcases, the band released a vinyl EP called “X” for a label in Spain called Impossible Records. A year later they followed it up with a single for Poptone Records which put them on the map in San Diego. In 1996 The Dragons Recorded “Painkiller” for Scam-O-Rama Records owned by the infamous “InebriaTED” who discovered the band during his tenure as writer for Flipside Magazine. Two years later The Dragons signed a deal with Junk Records from Long Beach (founded by Lou Carus and funded by Brian Holland of The Offspring) and released “Cheers To Me,” “R.L.F” and “Kamikaze” in three consecutive years. They followed that with a Japanese-only release titled, “The Dragons,” and toured Japan. In 2003 The Dragons signed with Gearhead Records with the “Master Mechanic himself” Mike LaVella and Michelle Haunold and released “Sin Salvation” as well as a remixed and remastered version “RockNRoll Kamikaze.” The Dragons have toured with The Wildhearts, Guitar Wolf, The Hellacopters, Riverboat Gamblers, B-Movie Rats, Texas Terri, Gaza Strippers, The Demons, The Black Halos, The Spitfires, and have shared bills with The Supersuckers, The Backyard Babies, Rocket From The Crypt, The Muffs, The Zeros and many other reputable and disreputable punks and rockers.
