Info: A word to you… All for the love of Rock: That’s really what made this collection of covers come together. These are some of our favorite tunes, some bonafide classics – or simply songs that made us all smile, sweat and scream at a show, band and audience alike. As The Dead Daisies, we pride ourselves not only on being a living, breathing, ass-kicking band very much of today, we also celebrate the history of Rock’n’Roll, the legacy of great music. In short: We are fans of Rock, like you, and we will always be. We love the good stuff from all eras, from the early blues greats to the classic rockers to the heavy-hitters of later times. So many terrific players, so many immortal words, so many larger-than-life riffs. This love for the music turned us into musicians in the first place and made us choose this crazy life. We’re sure you know exactly what we mean, and we’re glad you’re with us. That’s why every one of our albums has a cover song on it, that’s why we love to throw in some classics live and mix up the setlist. This collection brings together those tunes, done Daisies style, with big guitars, big vocals and always a bit of dirt under our collective fingernails. Just like we want it, don’t we? So crank them. They work well with generous amounts of volume and a huge smile on your face. After all, a great song is a great song is a great song. Long live Rock. Enjoy. See you out there. The Dead Daisies Line-Up: A lot of great musicians have been part of The Dead Daisies over the years.
The following can be heard on this album: Doug Aldrich, Jackie Barnes, Deen Castronovo, John Corabi, Richard Fortus, David Lowy, Marco Mendoza, Dizzy Reed, Jon Stevens, Brian Tichy
ABOUT THE SONGS —
“Midnight Moses“ Originally released by Alex Harvey on “Roman Wall Blues“ (1969), later re-recorded by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band for “Framed“ (1972) This song was introduced into the Daisies’ setlist during our historic visit to Cuba in 2015 as one of the first Western rock bands to do so. John Corabi joined our ranks at the time and suggested this tune, having been a long-time fan of Scottish rocker Alex Harvey who first released the song in 1969 as a solo artist and later made it famous with his Sensational Alex Harvey Band. We all liked playing it quite a bit so we recorded it ourselves for our second album “Revolución“ (2015). And since we still like it, it has been a staple of the set ever since. Fun fact: Chris Glen, original bass player of Harvey’s band (and later of MSG fame), joined us for a live rendition in Amsterdam in 2015.
“Evil“ Originally released by Howlin’ Wolf as a single called “Evil Is Going On“ (1954), re-recorded for the “The Howlin’ Wolf Album“ (1969) Now this little ditty is just as bad-ass as they come, don’t you think? We love how it keeps on moving, kicking and screaming with that original Blues spirit that is, as we all know, the basis of every good Rock’n’Roll tune. Willie Dixon wrote it in the Fifties, Howlin’ Wolf made it famous, and it has been considered a standard of Chicago Blues ever since. Richard Fortus brought it to the table early on in the Daisies’ history, and it made perfect sense for the sound we were going for. We finally recorded it for “Revolución“. If you ever attended a Daisies show, chances are you heard it live – still moving, kicking and screaming.
“Fortunate Son“ Originally released by Creedence Clearwater Revival on “Willy And The Poor Boys“ (1969) Everyone in the Daisies camp loves this one! Can you imagine that John Fogerty once said he wrote it in 20 minutes? Unbelievable! It has become a classic, and rightfully so, not only because of the implicit social criticism inspired by the Vietnam war that was raging when Creedence Clearwater Revival released the single in 1969. We put our spin on it for “Make Some Noise“ in 2016, played it live many, many times and included it on “Live & Louder“ in 2017. If you guys keep on singing it as loudly as you always do, it might stay in the set for a quite a while. We love it!
“Join Together“ Originally released by The Who as a single in 1972 We chose this gem by The Who to close “Make Some Noise“, since especially John Corabi and Doug Aldrich are huge fans of the band. The main statement is right there in the chorus: “Join together with the band“. We love how we all celebrate Rock’n’Roll at the shows, how band andfans literally “join together“. The Who incorporated an infectious synth motive in their original, but we stuck to guitars. David Lowy and Doug got it covered, we’d say, and we’d love to hear what Pete Townsend thinks of the Daisies makeover. It’s always fun to play live, with great singalongs by the fans, which is why it turned up on “Live & Louder“ as well, featuring that cool talk box intro from Doug. Thanks to The Who for a great tune and thanks to all of you for joining together with this band.
“Helter Skelter“ Originally released by The Beatles on “The White Album“ (1968) Where would be all be without the Beatles? All the music we love owes a lot to these four guys from Liverpool. And they rocked mightily as well! Paul McCartney really brought the noise on this one and set a template for a lot of Hard Rock that came later. We have been playing “Helter Skelter“ since the inception of the band and included it on our “Face I Love“ EP with Jon Stevens on vocals. And it’s still in the set on a regular basis. Do you like it? We do!
“Bitch“ Originally released by The Rolling Stones on “Sticky Fingers“ (1971) Of course we love the Stones! C’mon, who doesn’t? These guys pretty much wrote the book. We dug out this classic for our “Burn It Down“ album and had a blast giving that riff some extra fire. And hey, who says you can’t do brass parts on a sweet Les Paul Goldtop? Fun fact: This is the song that Gene Simmons ripped off the “Deuce“ lick from. We all love Kiss as well and had the honor of touring with them. It’s all connected in a weird, wonderful way. That’s what a good tune does, and we hope we did it justice. Thanks Mick & Keith.
“American Band” (live) Originally released by Grand Funk Railroad as “We’re An American Band“ on the album of the same name (1973) The Dead Daisies originated in Australia, but as you know, we are rockin’ all over the world. Since many players from the United States of America have graced our ranks, it’s fitting to pull out this classic, another one of Corabi’s favorites. It made its way into the set during the tours for “Make Some Noise“, since it is one of these songs all of us has played one time or another over the years. The reason is simple: It is fun. And that’s what it’s all about, right? “American Band“ turned out to be a natural fit for the Daisies, as you can hear on this version from “Live & Louder“.
“Revolution“ Originally released by The Beatles as the B-side of the single “Hey Jude“ (1968) When we recorded this number for “Burn It Down“ (2018), it was appropriate for the vibe on the planet at the time. Sometimes it feels a revolution is needed, don’t you think? The right kind of revolution that makes the world a better place. The lyrical content is what counts here, and it is timeless. We chose to cover the hard-rocking take from the B-side of “Hey Jude“, and yes, the “Fab Four“ could and did get loud (even though the bluesy version on “The White Album“ does have its moments). We first released our recording on some editions of “Burn It Down“, but since we quite like it, we figured you all should hear it. Here ya go…
“Rockin’ In The Free World” (live) Originally released by Neil Young on “Freedom“ (1989) This one just “happened“. It’s an awesome song to jam and really rock out to with its driving chord structure and catchy chorus, so we naturally kept pulling it out live. The most special rendition happened during our “Concert for Freedom“ at the huge Przystanek Woodstock festival in Poland in 2017 when we played the song in front of almost half a million people, accompanied by the 60-piece Gorzów Philharmonic Orchestra. Talk about sounding absolutely massive, baby! We surely won’t forget that night anytime soon… Enjoy and sing along!
“Highway Star” (live) Originally released by Deep Purple on “Machine Head“ (1972) Deep Purple are another favourite among the musicians in The Dead Daisies. It won’t get much more Classic Rock than this. Think about it: In 1972, this stuff was really heavy, and it still kicks ass. We started jamming this tune during the “Live & Louder World Tour“ and recorded it live in Zagreb. You guys were loud that night, and if you were there, you probably can hear yourself screaming. If you weren’t, just scream along at home! Our take on “Highway Star“ hasn’t been released so far, but here it is for your rocking pleasure.
