THE CULT – Concert review & Fan filmed videos by KICK ASS FOREVER – Live at MAHAFFEY THEATER in Saint Petersburg, FL April 21, 2022 – The bands first show of 2022 and first since the pandemic #TheCult
Thanks to both the staff of the Mahaffey Theater and to Live Nation for making this review possible!
THE CULT kicked off their current 2022 US Tour last week in Saint Petersburg, FL at the gorgeous Mahaffey Theater. This was the band’s first post pandemic concert, their first in 2.5 years! With no new album to support or showcase (but one is in the works!!!) the band gave a stellar 90 minute performance to a packed house of fans who seemed happy to be out and rockin’ to live music again.
The band has come a long way since their beginnings. I remember watching the older videos of the band, songs like “Rain” and “She sells sanctuary” and seeing the enigmatic and eclectic yet charismatic frontman Ian Astbury, dressed in a big frilly white shirt, headband and short black leather boots – this wasn’t really very rockin, was it? Yeah it was but it was different. The band was lumped into the “New Wave” and “New Romantic” movement in the early 80’s. It wasn’t until they dropped all over that for denim and leather and a few powered AC/DC power chords that it all changed in a historic way.
Now, The Cult was never really known for a band that presented a “show’, you know big video screens, pyro, flashing lights. At their core they are and always were about the music. This show was no different. Presenting a more or less greatest hits show, the band filled the venue with memorable, singable songs that they built their rock n roll reputation on. Ian and Billy Duffy (Guitars) have really cemented their place in the annals for rock n roll with a great song writing flare. See the set list below:
Sun King
New York City
Automatic Blues
Sweet Soul Sister
Soul Asylum
Edie (Ciao Baby)
American Horse
Aphrodisiac Jacket
Lil’ Devil
Peace Dog
Wild Flower
Revolution
Rain
She Sells Sanctuary
Love Removal Machine
Encore:
Rise
Fire Woman
If the band is rolling through your city you’d be best off not missing this great rock n roll show! The band sound quite amazing and looked like they were having fun. I an and Billy are showing no signs of slowing down, which is great news for all of us rock n roll fans!!!
***** Special thanks to Kaylee Walker of the Mahaffey Theater and Bridgette Franceschini of Live Nation for making this a great night for me!!!
