I was a fan of symphonic metal since the beginning of the genre and especially when I heard ‘Theli” in 1996 when it was newly released. I felt that since I liked that one, there was much more for me. I was right. Years have passed and I am still here waiting eagerly to check the debut full album of this unique Greek band that was released by my beloved German power-symphonic label Pride And Joy. I like Fabio’s vocals and the music, which is whole dark symphonic power featuring some killer guitars.
The music is pretty orchestral and the guitar riffs are blatantly heavy. But they (despite the keys) sound like an underground band with seriously intriguing musicians. They feature some important singers like Fabio Leone, Sakis Tolis and more that seem to mesh well with the operatic style. Mike Tzanakis is the mainman behind this vision and his work impresses us about its unique personality. An illustrious taste.
My favorite song of all this awesome debut album is “Heavens In War” that is featured on a YouTube lyric video for the song. I don’t much like the video but listening to the song on this cd has what really got me into this release, although I like all tracks on here. But this one a particular highlight for me. Absolutely.
The whole album seems to tell a story and seems to be a sort of concept release. Mike seems to infiltrate all the guest musicians with passion and they play their roles perfectly. Of course, as the band notices this is a project which would never take flesh and bones without the contribution and the hard work of the great producer and musician Bob Katsionis who is the mastermind for power metal in Greece!
I think that ‘The Book of Chaos” is an ideal start for the band. I feel that this one will rule big time and is one of my favorite symphonic gems for 2021. Though it was not a fine year for the genre…many typical stuff and Tales of the Old came to surprise me! I can’t wait to hear their sophomore full album in the future. Mike Tzanakis does the miracles of the songwriting and It’s no wonder he is a friend with some of the most important Greek metal musicians. Greek in metal, hell yes! Check this out!
