SUBFIRE – album “Define The Sinner” (10 September 2021, Symmetric Records)
Subfire began their musical journey back in 2004. After many gigs, line-up changes and 17 years later the band presents its debut work, “Define the Sinner”.
The making of “Define the Sinner” is like the making of wine. The longer it stays “unreleased”, the better it gets. So, the Subfire pretty much took quite literally the wine making approach and implemented it in their music.
They didn’t haste the process; they bided their time, until the final product was of their satisfaction. And if the result satisfies the artist who is the hardest judge then the fans will definitely enjoy it.
Subfire understood the importance of a strong debut, so they took extra care composing their first work, making sure that it won’t be another power metal record in the great tank of albums. They wanted to present something new, a sound that would be their own, fresh but at the same time rooted in the tradition. And this is exactly how the “Define the Sinner” feels like.
Musically, the “Define the Sinner” is in every aspect a heavy/power metal album. Straightforward, pure in essence, with heavy riffs, in the manner of the European scene with melodic lead guitars and shredding solos, wide choruses and great drum work that more often than not steals the show. The Subfire’s first work is a great example of the southern European power metal scene, represented from bands like the Labyrinth and Innerwish. They even have included the accustomed power ballad, “Pure Emotion”, placed to drop the bpm before the great finale.
Honestly, I tried to find something incriminating, something to nag about because it didn’t feel right to be that good without any fouls. But there is nothing negative to say about the record. It is straight up fun and enjoyable. The Subfire just released a great album and after a couple-maybe more, times listening to it, I am hooked.
While there is little to no experimentation and out of the box ideas, the “Define the Sinner” in its heavy/power spirit sounds both fresh and traditional, combining the best of both worlds. The Subfire took a 40 year old recipe, added the creative fire of an upcoming band and made a killer debut album.
