Bertrand originally envisioned a doom/psychedelic project, for which he recruited bassist Mat Forge and drummer Louis Lecomte. Dan and JF wrote a slew of instrumental doom-heavy prog tracks, some of which ended up on their first self-titled and self-produced album in 2015 (technically an EP with four songs, but with a running time of almost 40 minutes).
Singer Damien Ritual joined the band in 2014. Another EP, “Age Of The Universe,” followed two years later, followed by their first official album, “Sealed In Starlight,” on Temple Of Mystery (2021).
Starlight Ritual’s first release on High Roller Records is the new album “Rogue Angels” (on which Damien Ritual not only sings but also plays bass). He believes the band’s style has changed quite significantly since their early days: “The early stuff was much more psychedelic; people should be able to really zone out when listening to it. But I always felt that this sound didn’t represent us well. By »Sealed In Starlight« we had already found our identity: traditional heavy metal with an epic flair, a mix of Manowar and Running Wild as well as old heroes like Thin Lizzy and Rainbow. If I had to find a description for it, I think I would call it ‘epic hard rocking traditional metal’.”
Damien describes »Rogue Angels« as “sparkling, deadly and right on point”, and he is honored by the comparisons to Steve Grimmett. The record’s powerful song material is crowned by “Exodus”, an epic ballad with a strong doom vibe. “This is our ‘Heaven And Hell’ or ‘Egypt (The Chains Are On).’ Every good metal album must have an epic slow burner—and what could be more epic than the Old Testament?”
