1. When were Social Scream formed? Did you have any line-up changes so far?
Hi guys! Thanks for the interview! The band formed at 2008. Since then we have line-up changes due to various reasons. The big change happened in 2018 when we decided to continue as a 4 piece band with Vlasis Diamantakos take over both Vocals and guitars. This change had a direct impact to our sound since we don’t use keyboards and brutal vocals anymore.
2. Please let us know some more things about your discography.
Our first album “Epiclesis” released in 2014 as an independent release and re-released digitally at 2016 by New Dream Records. Our 2nd album “Initiation To The Myths” released at 2018 by New Dream Records in both digital and CD formats. At those 2 records the band played in a Heavy/Thrash style with some extreme and modern metal elements, back then we used keyboards and our original singer Christos did both clear and brutal vocals. Our latest album “Organic Mindset” is about 5 months out there as an independent CD release and have digitally distribution by Heart Of Steel Records. As I told in the previous question now we play as a 4 piece band and our sound is closer to traditional Heavy Metal with Thrash references.
3. What is the current situation for metal in Greece?
The Metal scene in Greece is huge the last 2 decades with many bands at all genres. There are a lot of webzines, fanzines and one monthly magazine that are engaged with Metal music. Also many concerts and festival take place in weekly base, especially in Athens and Thessaloniki. In this growth helped a lot the activity of bands like Rotting Christ, Septic Flesh, Gus G/Firewind and Suicidal Angels who were break the local boundaries and made Greek Metal popular worldwide.
4. You independently released your latest album “Organic Mindset”. What is your opinion on independent releases compared to label releases?
The cd format of “Organic Mindset” released independently but the digital format of the album distribute at all digital platforms by Heart of Steel records who also helped us by uploading some promo videos at Youtube/Instagram. We are not against label releases and when we have a good proposal we prefer to release our material through a label.
5. Please let us know some more things about the procedures of the album’s recordings.
The recordings started at early 2019 at Think Recording studios (Vocals) and Dimons Studios (all instruments) by producer Dimitris Sakkas. First tracked the rhythm guitars, then drums, bass and at the last phase we did all vocals, lead guitars and the female vocals at song “Taleton”.
6. What type of feedback have you gotten back so far for the album? Are you satisfied with it?
So far the reactions from both fans and press are very positive. We received many album reviews from all over the world and messages from people who didn’t knew us before.
7. Are you a live band and how much of a drawback was the pandemic for you?
Yes we are. We don’t do extending touring but we do shows inside Greece and looking for any chance to play in European summer festivals. The pandemic affected our live activity and unfortunately we haven’t done any live show since December 2018.
8. In your opinion, which are the ingredients of a good song?
Not sound generic, well played parts, interesting and adventurous structure.
9. When recording an album, do you come up with the exact number of songs you need for the album or do you record more songs and just pick out the best takes?
Usually we come with the exact number of songs. Vlasis Diamantakos is our main composer and he usually have in his mind a general idea of the album long before the recordings. Before we start recording the songs are finished and a few things may change here and there after the suggestions of the producer or our judgment.
10. What are your lyrics about?
We talk about life and the journey of mankind through the ages. We focus on unknown sides of our existence, trying to connect our mentality with our actions and nature.
11. You live outside of the capital of Athens. Do you face problems in creating and promoting your music due to this distance?
The first years of the band yes. The band back then activated only locally. After our first album and especially after 2018 we admitted that in order to grow the band we need to pass the borders of our small town and start to act where the scene is taking place. So in a way Athens became our second home since we do there all recordings, rehearsals and some live shows each year.
12. What are your plans for the “Organic Mindset” successor and what did you learn from making this album?
We are very satisfied from the sound, artwork and the way that “Organic Mindset” promoted. So for our next release we are going to associate again with Dimons Studios and Dimitris Sakkas , Dtopart design and Giannis Stergiou and have Angels PR helping us with promotion and booking. Our next release will be a 2cd combination with re-recorded versions of some of our old songs and we hoping to release it next year.
