The most important trait of Social Scream, if I had to name only one, is that they constantly evolve. From their first album, “Epiclesis” to their most recent work “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ”, which was released in 2022, the band has grown and evolved both musically and technically. This year the Social Scream return triumphant, unleashing their most complete and mature work so far.
My experience with Social Scream was a bit strange. I was introduced to the band through their album, “Organic Mindset, which is their third release and then I listened to their first two, thanks to the compilation album “From Ashes to Hope”, which contains re-recordings of the first two albums. Now, if you place those records in proper order, you can see the band’s evolution and progress and their desire to explore the heavy metal sound while they are setting their foundations on the late 80s and 90s sound.
This fact remains in all of their releases, including “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ”. However, in this particular release we are reviewing, Social Scream have tamed significantly their influences and have allowed their artistic self to rise above and sign their work. The “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” is more influenced by their previous releases than it is from any outside source.
The “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” remains in the area of heavy metal with thrash influences, however, the addition of groove, results in a mixture that faintly reminds of Pantera and could have been influenced a bit by them. I cannot confirm that officially, but that was my initial thought when I was listening to the album.
In the record there is a song called “Exaggelos”. A spoken word track, thrash influenced, with a killer rhythmic section, sharp riffs, punchy bass lines that closes beautifully with a melodic solo. This was my “wow, this is absolutely killer” moment. There are a lot of great songs in the record that can be singled out, such as the “Luna Dark”, “Frozen in Time” or “Evilivin” , so the picking-favorite process is completely subjective. For me, that one was “Exaggelos”.
In short, the Social Scream have absolutely delivered. The “ΔΕΙΝΟΝ ΕΣΤΙ” is a 90s album, fixed and shaped for 2022 without sacrificing any of those distinct traits that offer that sweet feeling of nostalgia. Social Scream’s fourth work is an album you should not miss.
