A soundtrack intro (“Infernum”) prepares the listener for what’s to come. Silent Winter unleash a 40 minute power/heavy metal attack in the name of their debut full length “The Circles of Hell” which they release after 25 years of existence!
The “Soul Reaper” captures some of the finest moments of the golder 80’s era of Heavy Metal and bands like Judas Priest, Helloween/Gamma Ray and Iron Maiden. The production is fresh although it still features elements of an old power/heavy metal production.
Mike Livas on the vocals is an excellent singer. He can sing low notes like for example in the verses of “Warriors of the Sun” where he sounds epic metal and Manowar influenced. In fact, there is also a small portion of Blind Guardian in the storytelling parts, too. At the chorus of the same song Mike reaches his high notes and proves his love for Rob Halford. Sometimes he also whispers making the song more occult. Generally speaking Mike Livas is a top class power/heavy metal singer. You can judge for yourself by listening to the album.
“Follow the Night” riff is a riff that Helloween would have been proud to write. The faster parts make the song a bit thrash/speed maintaining the heavy/power feeling though. An excellent Maiden-ish lead guitar and some additional excellent guitar phrasing plus the memorable themes make the song a song you will definitely return to.
“Final Storm” begins with the storming vocals of Mike Livas singing stories of Glory and Steel. Good old heavy metal is present. The riff is classy and the snare is ready for war. Kiriakos is a very good lead guitar soloist and this is one of his top moments.
“Your Time has come” is another nice example of Silent Winter Heavy Metal approach. This band can actually write good music.
“Silent Cry” is a bit of more folk/metal. The song sounds like it has a northern metal orchestration with soprano female vocals added. The lead guitar is very emotional. “Keeper of the Light” flirts with Gamma Ray. An enjoyable song with nice chorus. “The Circles of Hell” closes the album in the best possible way.
Silent Winter is a band with potential. They released an excellent album. Fans of power metal and also fans of old heavy metal will dig it.
