Every country’s metal scene has its own distinct futures. Usually, as a listener, you can tell apart a band that nods towards the German power metal from one that is inspired by the more elegant Italian style power bands. One such scene with a distinct musical feature, that is also really dear to me, is the Greek power metal scene. Bands like the Innerwish, Emerald Sun or Diviner are some of the finest in power metal and when it came up to review the Silent Winter’s sophomore release, “Empire of Sins” I was very optimistic. As it turned out, I was right.
Silent Winter released their second work, entitled “Empire of Sins” in 2021. It is a bit late, I know, but no harm is done, better late than ever. So, although it is a last year’s release, the “Empire of Sins” is one of the finest power metal records I had the pleasure to listen to lately.
Important fact, it has no fillers. The “worst” song of the record is great and the “best”-rooting for the “Hunter’s Oath”- is amazing. There is a strange grandeur in the compositions, a majestic feeling that cannot be accurately described but it is real and you can experience it from the first minute of the album.
In the “Empire of Sins” we get 48 minutes of thundering power metal in its most pure and undiluted form. No cutbacks, only fiery shredding solos that light up the fret board, grand and wide choruses and compositions with character, attitude and the Silent Winter’s own artistic signature. Every single detail is carefully polished creating a massive in musical volume work, filled with epic tales, epic riffs and that building tension ability that makes their choruses to sound enormous. By dropping down the pace or through amazing bridges the Silent Winter manage to add volume to their choruses, making them absolutely epic.
The riffs are crunchy with a strong bite, taking up the higher end of the production, leaving the rhythm section of bass and drums to handle the groove and the low end. The drum work is more than a simple beat keeper, but it has a musicality and slight aggression that when is combined with the epic riffs, which sometimes show thrash influences, and the prominent and well-place bass lines, creates a strong and powerful result that hits like a musical brick wall. One more thing that must not go unmentioned is the captivating vocal performance that thanks to Mike Livas’ vocal range and vocal lines elevates the album to new heights, and is simply a delight to listen to.
In conclusion and with the notion not to tire you further, a year might have passed but the “Empire of Sins” is still one of the best records you can find in the scene. If you haven’t already listened to it, then you absolutely must give it a shot and prepare to be amazed.
