Shatterheart – “Ground Turns To Dust”
From the heart of Gothenburg’s heavy music scene comes Shatterheart, a symphonic/power metal act whose first official release, the “Ground Turns to Dust” EP, is here to make a statement. Containing just three tracks, it’s clearly meant as a prelude to their upcoming full-length, but do not fool yourselves, there’s nothing half-measured about what’s on display here.
The EP opens with “A Shattered Heart” and within moments it’s obvious where the band’s roots lie. Cinematic keys sweep across the soundscape bringing the distinct “symphonic” tone, while the guitars lay down riffs both hefty and melodic, giving the track that soaring, larger-than-life feel. The production feels fresh and modern, but the core of classic symphonic/power metal pulses strongly beneath it.
Track two, “No Rest”, takes a moodier turn. A ghostly keyboard motif sets the stage as we venture into a theatrical almost scenery, before the rhythm section strikes with bite. The contrast between the choir-backed atmosphere and the guitar drive gives this song a restless energy that fits its title perfectly. Melodic lines thread through the heaviness, keeping it firmly anchored in the melodic trends that define the genre.
Before the EP closes, it’s worth noting vocalist Alicke’s stand out role. In a style that demands both technical range and emotional conviction, she rises to the challenge, delivering every line with clarity, fire, and a sense of drama that elevates the music as a whole. Considering that we are talking about a symphonic band, that’s three out of the three essentials elements that must exist for a symphonic metal track to have gravitas and a stand-out presence.
The final track, “Ground Turns to Dust”, encapsulates everything Shatterheart has to offer. Its operatic intro swells into thick, weighty riffs; the chorus lodges itself in memory after a single listen; and subtle gothic shades lend it a bittersweet edge. It’s an impressive closer that leaves you wanting the rest of the album immediately.
In just three songs, Shatterheart demonstrate they’re ready to compete on the world stage of symphonic and power metal. “Ground Turns to Dust” is less an introduction than a declaration, and if the upcoming full-length builds on this foundation, the future looks very bright indeed
