I remember the name of Selefice from the golden era of the Greek scene. In the early 90’s when the second wave of black metal put Greece in the map of extreme metal music, Selefice chose their own path and released a remarkable album “Where is the Heaven”. I am not sure how many people got their point back then, because this band chose to be different. They played a mixture of doom/death and thrash with additions that were ahead of their time like psychedelic rock, prog rock and dark wave. They disbanded shortly after the release of their only album to date.
“I Met a God” MCD comes more than 25 years later and Selefice continue to amaze me. 4 solid songs are enough for them to bridge the past with the present and the future! Let’s get to them track by track:
“Mora” has a haunting atmosphere. Imagine you are suffocating in your sleep. You wake up, but cannot move! All the fear in your eyes is put to notes here. Great vocals and a remarkable riff supported by the solid rhythm section.
“Kol Haneshama” is a song about the religious wars. I am sure Bolt Thrower would love such themes although Selefice style is diverse and brings to mind Rotting Christ of the late albums.
“I Met a God” has a punchy old Sepultura riff that is decorated with Candlemass doom breaks that will blow your head off. The dynamics are excellent here and the bass solo in the middle of the song followed by a Pink Floyd meets King Crimson and Camel lead are beyond words.
“Damned” is the missing link of the 90’s Selefice. A song that waited for more than 25 years to be released but still sounds fresh!
To sum up, “I Met a God” is a fantastic comeback release from a legendary band from the depths of the Greek underground. The mini album has the signature of Savvas Betinis of Acid Death fame (another legendary Greek band) in production, mixing and mastering. Check out all Selefice material that has thankfully been re-released. I am looking forward for their full length!
