The mighty and legendary British Metal band SAXON roared in Tampa, Florida’s club called The Brass Mug and played a blistering set to a capacity crowd recently. The packed club was a virtual sweat box(gross!)but that didn’t deter the band from flat-out annihilating the crowd! Saxon leader Biff Byford told the crowd they hadn’t played Florida in a very long time due to promoters telling them “Ah, nobody in Florida wants to see Saxon!” – well, just goes to show what they know! I was shocked at the turn out, it was quite awesome to see so many people there for a band that has been grinding it out and celebrating their 40th anniversary as a band – FORTY YEARS!!!

The set was an amazing mix of old and new songs. Opening with a track from their latest album, the title track THUNDERBOLT blared over the PA and the already the crowd was really into it. But of course the older, more classic Saxon songs were to come…….WHEELS OF STEEL, STRONG ARM OF THE LAW, DENIM AND LEATHER, HEAVY METAL THUNDER, 20,000 FEET. I mean this band’s catalog is SO deep they could’ve played all night long! They sprinkled in some nice older nuggets like BACKS TO THE WALL, FROZEN RAINBOW, and HUNGRY YEARS. The band sounded tight, and Biff’s voice still sounds great. There wasn’t a lot of room on the stage but Saxon poured a lot of energy into the show!

The tail end of the show was expectedly loaded with classic Saxon songs from the early days – DALLAS 1PM, CRUSADER, 747(STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT) and of course, PRINCESS OF THE NIGHT closed out the show. I marvel at Saxon’s staying power and their will to keep playing high quality heavy metal after so many years. yes, some of the faces have changed in the band along the ways, but ANY time you’re around as long as they have been, things are going to change. If they roll through your City do yourself a favor and GO SEE THIS BAND!!! One the greatest and long-lasting pure metal bands we still have. The show was loud and fast and Saxon has not lost a beat!!!! Here’s the set list —
