Risen Crow – Requiem for a Damned Love

Hailing from Rome, Risen Crow is a new and upcoming power metal band, with their official debut already released and titled “Requiem for a Damned Love”.

In the 8 songs that consist the album, Risen Crow establish their sound. A sound that is quite familiar, yet it manages to surprise and avoids being overused or even cliche. “Requiem for a Damned Love” is an album that offers exactly what is advertised. Which is nothing but well-executed power metal, European style, blended with darker overtones and a distinctive gothic aesthetic that defines a fair part of the record.

So, as I already mentioned, Risen Crow deliver a well-executed and performed work. That is what makes this album good. “Never Surrender”, the album’s opening track, strikes relentlessly, with fast-paced power metal riffs, epic harmonies and that grand aesthetic that usually accompanies the traditional, mostly European, power metal sound. In a sense, like Rhapsody but with less dragons and more gothic inspired themes.

“Black Widow” is the “Angels Fall First” of the Risen Crow. Powerful, grand and memorable, the album’s second track reminds of Nightwish’s beloved debut, with the gothic overtones taking a firm hold in the composition, completing the premise of the “Requiem for a Damned Love”.

“Funeral Jack” differentiates slightly in the intro with an epic/heavy tone, before it finds its way back the fiery power metal roots that command speed, melody, and a certain elegance. On the same page is the fourth track as well, the same-titled “Risen Crow”, defined by an epic, melodic lead guitar line which finds balance between the power metal and the darker, gothic influences. The result is fast-paced and exciting, while at the same time carries a quiet, melancholic melody.

Fifth comes the track “Revelation”, a straight up power metal power house, exactly as you imagine a traditional, almost speed if I dare say, power metal track would be. Fast and grand, the album’s fifth track is power metal tradition. Unlike the “Dark in my Life” which, as the title betrays, is darker. A very riff oriented track, with heavy/power metal inclination, focusing on the band’s gothic side. From a complimentary and distinctive detail in the power metal establishment, the gothic element comes into the foreground, claiming the spotlight that deserves.

Just before the finale- and what finale it would be- “Believe in Me” comes on blazing and roaring.  With speed that sets the fretboard ablaze, great melodic lines, a powerful chorus and a exceptional execution of the Risen Crow’s sound, I must admit that between “Dark in my Life” and this, “Believe in Me” claims the spot for the record’s favorite song.

We conclude with the album’s eighth and final track, “Black Rose”. One would expect for the album to come full circle and with a final song similar to the one that began the album. Fortunately that is not the case.  Because Risen Crow kept their most haunting and eerie song for the finale, an operatic, gothic masterpiece, covering the “Requiem for a Damned Love” in a black veil, as the curtain falls and it’s time for an applaud, for is well-earned there is no doubt for that.
