Pyramid is an American progressive metal super-project, a collaboration of choice virtuosos, delivering high class and high action songs. The main man of this band is Lance Sawyer and he co-operate of the best musicians of the metal scene like Tim Ripper Owens (ex-Judas Priest, ex-Iced Earth, among others), Andry Lagiou (The Harps), Harry Conklin “The Tyrant” (Jag Panzer) on vocals, Mike Abdow (Fates Warning) on guitars and Chris Quirarte (Redemption) on drums, Adam Bentley (Arch Echo)guitars and mixing engineer, Joey Izzo (Arch Echo) the master on the keyboards and Perrine Missemer on the amazing violin. The debut entitled “Rage” was released in 2022, via Sleaszy Rider.
What do you get when you place these great musicians in a record? Exactly, what you would expect. While the album lasts for over an hour, time flies, since the album delivers exciting tracks that keep you always on edge, without the Pyramid ever slowing the pace. Opening with the song “Greed”, the Pyramid spare no time and introduce their sound with an epic, power/progressive track that lasts about 8 minutes and does a great job setting the mood and putting the audience in the musical world of the Pyramid.
While the album spans for over an hour, its format remains almost unchanged all throughout its duration. The Pyramid, in their debut work, remain in their area of expertise, which is the writing and composing of power metal fused progressive songs, with high bpm, complex rhythmic motives and of course, the epic element always present. In the album, there are scattered some heavy metal ideas as well, with the most prominent ones being in the songs “Rage” and “Beast”, with phrasing and riffs that reminded of something inspired by the Iron Maiden and the N.W.O.B.H.M scene.
In the record, there is one song that it felt like breaking that power/progressive pattern and it is the track “Empty Roads”. Defined by the exceptional vocal performance by Andry Lagiou, this particular track has a distinct blues phrasing that it reminded of Beth Hart, if she ever decided to follow a more progressive metal focused career.
Concluding, the “Rage” is a straightforward release that delivers exactly what it advertises. Power fused progressive metal of great musicianship that is guaranteed to satisfy the fans of the genre.
