Founded in Athens, Greece, Project Renegade released their debut full-length album, “Order of the Minus”, in 2019. While it may have taken me 3 years to find out about this record, there is no such thing as too late. So, let’s dive in right into the matter at hand.
Project Renegade is a modern metal band, product of its era. Their artistic approach is based around the musical ideas and standards that were developed in the metal scene, in the ‘00s. For many metalheads a statement like this usually comes with a negative sign, but I do not imply anything like this. This is simply an observation about the sound and musical approach of the Project Renegade, while objectively I absolutely enjoyed their whole modern style, especially, since I don’t find myself enjoying albums like these often enough.
The “Order of the Minus”, being the product of its times, is a blend of nu and alternative metal, with a strong groovy backbone, while some of its breaches extend to the metalcore. Bands like the Evanescence, Within Temptation or Amaranthe seem like they have influenced notably the sound of Project Renegade. These might not have been their exact sources of inspiration, but I believe they are pretty accurate as a point of reference. Powerful, bright choruses built around the amazing vocal range of the band’s singer, is the trademark of the album. Important part of the album is, also, the groovy rhythmic section, composed by heavy, chunky riffs, dynamic, solid basslines and a drumwork that can only be described as pleasantly memorable.
In their debut, the Project Renegade manage to maintain a balance between the heaviness and elegance, by incorporating melodic lines in the most musically extreme parts of the record. Although, this is just their debut release, Project Renegade show incredible professionalism, that is depicted in this wholesome first musical effort.
In case it hasn’t been obvious, the “Order of the Minus” is highly recommended and it deserves your listening time without a doubt. Project Renegade seem to be fiercely creative, skillful and most importantly dedicated and with a bright future ahead in the metal scene. Since three years have passed now from their debut, let’s hope that the follow-up work will come soon enough.
