In the lore of the trading card game Magic: The Gathering, the planeswalking is a form of magic. They who possess such power are called planeswalkers and they are able to travel inside the multiverse. Planeswalkers manifest incredible power and they are able to prolong their lives indefinitely and to create their own planes. As a result, they often are regarded and worshipped as gods by the mortals.
The truth is that once you hear the album in review and learn a few things about the lore of Magic: The Gathering and the planeswalker, it’s fairly easy to draw parallels. Jason Ashcraft and Michael Sozos, the founders of the band, might not be able to offer eternal life or to create their own magical planes, but they manifest another kind of magic. Their special skill, art or magical power-call it whatever you want, is their ability to compose amazing and captivating power metal albums. And I dare to say captivating, because even though I was only aware of the game with no further knowledge, I got into it after a couple of times listening to “Tales of Magic”.
I believe by now you understand that the album’s theme is based on the lore of the Magic: The Gathering. If you are a fan of the game you very well know what this means and how well it can be combined with the power metal. For all of us who were and are clueless, the universe of this trading card game is quite vast and full of legendary warriors, beasts, dragons and mythical creatures, thus the a perfect candidate for a power metal album.
The “Tales of Magic” is a blend of melodic lead guitars infused with neo classical influences, shredding guitar solos, wide verses with huge choruses, epic passages and amazing clean vocals. The European power metal influences from bands like the Rhapsody and Labyrinth are quite clear in their work, since they prefer the more delicate kind of power metal instead of the grittier, more riff based sound that was formed in the other side of the Atlantic.
Apart from the 6 original compositions there is also a cover of the classic song “A Million to One” by Kiss. The Planeswalker found a way to transform this rock ‘n’ roll classic into a power metal track, without sacrificing any of the original spark and attitude of the song. Even in the covers their musicianship is evident.
The “Tales of Magic” is to be released in January 21st, so if you are reading this earlier save the date so you won’t miss this amazing release. Either way, Planeswalker is one killer debut of great power metal compositions, that once unleashed I am confident that will take the power scene by storm.
