Moaning Silence is an atmospheric metal band based in Athens,Greece in the veins of Anathema, Paradise Lost, Tiamat & Theater of Tragedy.
Moaning Silence is a Greek gothic/doom metal band from Athens. The core of the band is the guitar player/vocalist Christos Dounis and the female vocalist Eleftheria Aggeloudi. As you can instantly understand, the female vocals are operatic while the male ones basically circle around different types of death metal brutal growls. However, in certain songs the male vocals appear having a tenor mood thus are clean.
The band entered Symmetry Studio to record what appears to be their second full length album. Bob Katsionis did a very nice work in the production and mixing of the album to bring forth the best of the band and underline their dark atmosphere. The album is released through his own label Symmetric Records.
Moaning Silence music is sorrow-filled and doomy with goth references. The riffs are basically heavy and slow to mid tempo with remarkable work done on the acoustic guitars. The synth work is also very nice and highlightens their themes. Sometimes the songs have a rather soundtrack atmosphere as if coming from a Tim Burton movie.
Most of the songs seem to be short stories and the band seems to narrate these stories rather than playing songs in the typical sense of it. The minor chords and full of pain and sorrow melodies structure and build their songs.
Standout tracks are the opening song “Rite of Decay” which enters you in their dark realm of old gothic/doom/death and bands like (old) Septic Flesh (now Septicflesh), (old) On Thorns I Lay and Theater of Tragedy. “I am the Sorrow” for being a dark story in itself. The song is also released as a video which pretty much summarizes what the band is about and their aesthetic. Additionally, the closing song “The Lights of Alexandria” is another excellent song that mystifies you with the piano overtones under the narration of a Konstantinos Kavafis poem in Greek. The basic part of the song is structured on a doom riff of Candlemass and Solitude Aeturnus fame.
To sum up, the album is indeed “A Waltz into Darkness”. The avant garde mood is everywhere and there is dark romantic atmosphere matching a waltz into darkness indeed. What’s left after listening is a sweet feeling that makes you get back to the album again. The cover artwork is amazing and I would love to see it on the big cover of a vinyl edition and an inside poster, just like in the old days.
