MASSIVE WAGONS – monthly update

Oh yes, we are in the thick of the early stages of album production, simultaneously writing and making demo recordings of new material as well as general rehearsing for the live shows to come. I’ve found 20 mins to put the headphones down and write this, but we are well in the swing of things now, I’d say we have 70% of an album written and we’re feeling good about it all. There was 2 years between Welcome To The World and Full Nelson, and sometimes too long a period can mean things get overcooked and overthought, these new songs definitely have a rawer vibe as we are just ploughing on with a purpose! It feels a little more like it did in ye olden days..

This is the quickest we’ve ever got back to seriously writing after a release, it’s only been 5 months since Full Nelson hit the shelves. That’s down to a few factors. The first is down to a good friend of ours who has sorted us out with a more permanent rehearsal space where we can leave our equipment set up so we can roll in, do what we need to do whenever we can and roll out, whereas in the past we had to rent one of the much-in-demand local rehearsal spaces in advance and spend ages plugging things in and whatnot before we could get to business. We’ve never had this arrangement before and it’s been a game changer. Another and more obvious reason we are able to commit to writing so soon is the fact we already have a record label in place who are already thinking of all the timings, the logistics and business side of releasing a new album, leaving us to focus completely on what we do.

We have spent the last couple of weeks making semi-rough recordings of the new songs, these will soon be sent to potential producers to listen to and we will find out who fancies the job of directing us band of wallys during the actual sessions for the album. We’ve never done this before so it’s all new to us, I can’t work out if producers are auditioning us or are we auditioning them.. I guess it’s a bit of both. Some names have been bandied about and it’s really cool to hear our name in the same sentence as these guys, exciting times indeed! No promises but we aim to be recording proper between our March – May touring and the summer festivals, so it’s not inconceivable you will get a new album before 2019 is out.. but this is the music business and there’s only one thing for certain in this game – nothing is certain!

Demo mixing – personally it’s one of my favourite parts of the whole shebang.

2019 is bringing us some big shows, and no small amount of pressure if I’m honest! We’ve been offered headline status at some high profile festivals which is very humbling, but it also brings a new dimension to how we approach the live set. We are constantly tightening the screws of our performance though now we are considering the visual aspect of the show, as we will have the resources and space to do so. I feel promoters and the media are embracing the future a little more willingly these days, and are giving bands like ourselves the opportunity to step up to the plate and prove ourselves worthy of high profile slots. It feels very cool to be in the vanguard of what I hope is the next generation of bands to top these shows, we have a lot to prove, and we can’t wait to get our teeth into some big stages! There will be murmurs of dissent among those who have their rose tinted spectacles glued to their face, but music has to forge ahead and we are more than willing to take the task head on.

Baz and I have been talking to German radio and media to promote our first tour of Germany in March (supporting Thunder), if the press alone are anything to go by we are in for a good time, such nice guys! And they are all mad Rush fans, so I have been talking their ears off. Seriously though, we seem to have built some sort of presence in Germany without actually ever being there, it’s a strange feeling, and it’s mainly down to Spotify.. so any ‘streaming sceptics’ can make of that what they will. In our experience it’s brought nothing but good things.

We’ve been busy in other areas too, making some preliminary plans for future projects, some of which I really hope we get to live out because I guarantee they will go down a storm. Our first album re-master of Fire It Up was received well by new and old alike, for those waiting on the ‘Sniff The Riff’ feature on the website, rest assured it will be online soon!
