From the distant island of Réunion, in the Indian Ocean, Lomor emerge as one of the most authentic and uncompromising Thrash Metal acts to surface from France in recent years. With their second full-length album “Sabouk Rouge“, the trio delivers a record that is both fiercely rooted in old-school tradition and deeply connected to the cultural and historical identity of their homeland. Following the raw intensity of their debut “Perseverance of Sickness” (2022), “Sabouk Rouge” expands Lomor’s sonic and thematic scope, sharpening their attack while embracing darker, more conceptually ambitious territory.
Formed in 2018 by vocalist and guitarist Eric Castelnau and drummer Gurvan Cambrai, later joined by bassist Mathieu “Micha” Michalina, Lomor were born from personal loss and artistic urgency. The band’s name itself, meaning “the deads” in Réunion Creole, reflects the tragedies that shaped the project and the will to transform grief into forward momentum. This sense of purpose permeates “Sabouk Rouge“, an album conceived as a confrontation with violence, oppression and human madness using the history of slavery on Réunion Island as both a literal and symbolic foundation. The “sabouk” – the whip used against enslaved people – becomes a central metaphor for historical brutality and its modern echoes while blood-red imagery contrasts with the cold, clinical white of the album artwork symbolizing emotional detachment and collective insanity.
Musically, “Sabouk Rouge” is a visceral and varied Thrash Metal record that proudly rejects contemporary shortcuts. Lomor describe their sound as “Creole thrash old-school stuff”, firmly rooted in the legacy of Slayer, Testament and Kreator, yet infused with hardcore urgency, punk rawness and an unmistakable local character. Across eleven tracks, the album delivers relentless riffing, aggressive grooves and sudden tempo shifts balancing sheer speed with a strong sense of dynamics and atmosphere. Songs like “Sabouk Rouge” and “Meet Your Meat” strike with ferocity and historical weight, while “Sanctuary” explores darker and ritualistic tones. “La Haine” channels pure fury in its denunciation of religious hypocrisy, whereas “A Shiny Day For A Vampire” introduces a twisted melodic edge. The Creole-language track “La Pouss’” adds humor and local color through its tale of illegal street racing and the cover “Kit’ Ta Mère” reconnects Lomor with Eric’s past in the punk-thrash scene of Réunion Island, tying past and present together with uncompromising energy.
The album was produced by the band themselves, recorded and mixed by Sébastien Camhi at Studio Art Music in France and mastered by Kai Stahlenberg at Kohlekeller Studio in Germany. Compared to the debut, the production is more defined and powerful, yet deliberately avoids excessive polish. Drum sounds remain sharp and metallic, guitars abrasive and direct and the bass deliberately exposed preserving the physicality of a true power trio. Lomor refuse click tracks, backing samples or layered guitars, both in the studio and on stage relying instead on instinct, interaction and volume. This philosophy translates into a sound that feels alive, imperfect and dangerous in the best possible way.
This approach has already earned Lomor strong recognition from the press. Legacy Magazine described their music as “fast and aggressive metal with a classic thrash sound, a bit of hardcore and even a little punk to keep it fresh and lively,” while Rock Hard France noted that the band can “stand toe to toe with Havok, Warbringer or Evile without any problem,” praising both the efficiency of the compositions and the vocal delivery often compared to the phrasing of Tom Araya and the aggression of Mille Petrozza. Such feedback underscores Lomor’s ability to honor the roots of Thrash Metal while asserting a distinct identity within the modern scene.
Beyond its historical and social weight, “Sabouk Rouge” never becomes oppressive or one-dimensional. Lomor deliberately intertwine tragedy with irony, brutality with absurdity transforming social reflection into an adrenaline-fueled experience that remains engaging from start to finish. The band’s goal is clear: to create an album that never feels monotonous where each track carries its own mood and purpose while contributing to a coherent whole. The result is a record that feels both confrontational and alive, steeped in anger, violence and dark humor, yet driven by an undeniable passion for metal in its purest form.
With “Sabouk Rouge“, Lomor reaffirm their position as a fiercely independent voice in modern Thrash Metal, merging the genre’s old-school intensity with cultural depth and a strong sense of place. Endorsed by D’Addario and ESP France and supported by Stage OI and Backstage ZeShop Musicstore, the band are now preparing to bring their Creole Thrash assault beyond Réunion and across Europe. “Sabouk Rouge” is more than a second album: it is a statement of identity, resistance and raw musical conviction.
