Leave The Wave emerged from Cyprus, a place not traditionally associated with grunge. How has your local scene shaped your sound and mindset as a band?
It’s true that Cyprus isn’t traditionally associated with grunge or alternative rock. The local scene is more focused on traditional and regional music, so our sound wasn’t really shaped by what was happening around us. Instead, our influences came from the music we discovered on our own. What Cyprus did give us, though, is a deep passion for music. Cypriots really love to connect, enjoy themselves, and live in the moment through music, and that energy and love for having a good time definitely shaped our mindset as a band
Your music balances heaviness with atmosphere. When writing new material, what usually comes first: the emotional mood or the musical framework?
Usually, the musical framework comes first. We meet at the studio for rehearsals and songwriting, and most of our ideas are born while we’re just jamming together. From those raw riffs and structures, the emotional mood slowly reveals itself and shapes the final direction of the song.
“Monster” introduced you to the public with a very intense narrative. Did you expect such a heavy debut to define the way people perceive the band?
We didn’t really think in terms of expectations when we released ‘Monster.’ It was just the song that felt the most honest to who we were at that moment. We knew it was intense and heavy, but we didn’t set out to define how people would perceive the band. If anything, it was important for us to be real from the start, even if that meant introducing ourselves in a very raw and dark way.
Rather than focusing on facts, “Monster” explores psychological darkness. Do you see storytelling as a central element of your songwriting?
That song was very specific, but the rest of our material goes deeper into the inner world of people and the personal struggles everyone carries. Intensity is part of our sound, but the core of what we write about is human emotion and inner conflict.
Disturbance feels like an album meant to be experienced as a whole. Was the track order and flow something you carefully designed?
Yes, everything on the album was carefully designed. We paid a lot of attention to the track order and the overall flow so that Disturbance feels like a complete experience from start to finish. That same care went into every detail, including the album artwork and the final presentation. For us, it was important that the album works as one unified piece, not just a collection of songs.
Working with a film music composer like George Solonos is not very common in grunge records. What did his cinematic background bring to the album?
George isn’t just a film composer, he’s also a rock musician, and that was essential for us. We’ve always loved his work, and we honestly felt he was the only person who could bring this album to life the way we imagined it. His cinematic background added depth and atmosphere, but his understanding of rock music helped keep everything raw and grounded.
Sonically, the album feels dense and immersive. How important was texture and layering in shaping the final sound?
Texture and layering were very important, but nothing was overthought or forced. Everything came together naturally during the process to achieve that result. We focused on letting the songs evolve organically, and the dense, immersive sound is simply the outcome of that approach.
Many of your songs deal with inner conflict and unease. Do you see music as a way of confrontation, release, or reflection?
For us, music is an escape from everyday life and whatever comes our way. It’s the most honest way we have to express and reveal what’s inside us, but also a way to explore and bring out our inner world. It can be confrontation, release, and reflection all at the same time.
Your live performances have included festivals and high-profile support slots. How has sharing the stage with other bands influenced your confidence and evolution?
Sharing the stage with other bands and musicians is something we really enjoy. Being around different artists and experiencing the stage together is inspiring. You can learn something from everyone, whether it’s about performance, sound, or mindset and that has definitely helped us grow and gain confidence as a band.
How do audiences usually react to your darker material during live shows, especially when they hear it for the first time?
Even on first listen, our darker songs usually create an intense connection. The audience feels it, and the energy in the room changes instantly.
Looking ahead, do you feel more drawn to expanding your sound or digging even deeper into the heavy grunge roots you’ve established?
We’ve already started writing the next album, and we think it’s going to be even heavier than the previous one. We’re excited to dig deeper into our sound while pushing our own limits
