INNERVERSE (Symphonic Progressive Metal – Greece 🇬🇷) – Interview via Angels PR Worldwide Music Promotion #innerverse #symphonicmetal #heavymetal
InnerversE is described as a music group formed by Lampros Marantos in Athens, Greece. Could you share the story behind the formation of InnerversE and the vision you had for the band’s musical direction?
Sure. As a musician myself, i started at a very young age with piano lessons and music theory studies. From an early age I developed the ability to compose music both in piano and guitar. As a teenager i started to listen to more rock and metal music, which surely at a certain degree influenced me in my compositions. The name InnerversE was chosen because it accurately portrays the journey that a listener travels through when listening to our music. The name came up at around 2010, where i have produced some songs in my home studio that where in the style of symphonic progressive metal. It means a trip in the inner universe of the listeners where the can identify with the emotions expressed through the songs with their life experiences. We can say that the musical direction of the band is Symphonic Progressive metal with some ethnic elements.
· “Awakenings” is noted for its symphonic progressive metal style with various influences and instrumental flavors, including ethnic elements. What were the main inspirations behind this album, and how did you incorporate these diverse elements into your compositions?
Well, i listen to various styles of music, for example soundtracks and classical music from Composers such as John Williams, Hans Zimmer , Dvorak, As for symphonic metal i am influenced by groups such as Epica and Therion, for the progressive metal factor groups like Dream Theater, Symphony X and for symphonic power metal in the likes of Angra and Blind Guardian. In my compositions i try to get inspired by many different elements such as books, movies, history, mythology. Inspiration flows in a magic way when i perform in the piano or the electric guitar and i believe that i manage to filter my music inspirations and present them through the prism of InnerversE as an output.
· With seven out of the eight tracks on “Awakenings” being instrumental, what motivated the decision to focus predominantly on instrumental compositions for this debut?
It was about the character of the songs. Some of these songs span in time period of the last decade and they were to a certain degree already developed when we started to produce the album with greek known produced Bob Katsionis. They were many elements in these songs that gave them an instrumental aura. Many melodies, lots of changes in rhythms. I believe that they were already full of musical ideas and vocals would not fit as an extra element, it would reduce the amount of progressive character of the compositions which can also be viewed as soundtracks of symphonic metal. Except from the “The Promise” song which from the beginning of the composition it already incoporated vocal lyrics. Composing instrumental gives the ability to infuse each track with a lot of musical instruments and the only limit on the diversity of the song is your own imagination.
· The Promise” stands out as the sole track featuring vocals, performed by Vasilis Marantos. How did this collaboration come about, and what was the creative process like for this particular song?
Yes this is the only song in the album that has vocals in it. From its initial creation, i had outlined form structures like verses, choruses and bridges, therefore it came naturally to add vocal lines on it. This composition is intense, theatrical with lots of elements and changes in it is surely one of the best on the album. I composed it first solely on piano , but afterwards added symphonic instruments, electric guitars and so on. My brother was guided by the melodies and added his lyrics and vocal lines.
· The album’s compositions are said to take listeners on a journey through various feelings, sounds, and melodies. What themes or messages were you aiming to convey through this musical journey?
Our first album is a musical journey. It includes 7 instrumental songs and 1 with vocals (“The Promise”). I believe that each one of the songs has it’s own character and a story to tell. There are powerful compositions like the opener “Lust For Freedom” which deals with the concept of freedom in both personal and collective level and “The Source of Life” that aim to release feelings of opening to the mystery of life, to experience once boundaries and reach beyond (with soulful melodies). Cry Of Lucifer has a religious / mythical background and portrays in it’s doomy melodies the figure of Lucifer and it’s expel from heaven. “Flying in the dark” is proggy, with introspective melodies and an outburst of emotions in it’s progress. It’s about the erotic union of a couple where in the night they share their love, passion and secrets as they unite in one flesh. “Fractal of Loss” is more dark and deals with feelings of loss and mourning of a dear person, with it’s main bittersweet melody. ‘The Promise” is the longest track in the album and it includes vocals from my brother Vasilis Marantos. It is very progressive with lot’s of changes and moods and the final bombastic outro with the symphonic elements. Ishtar is the track where the ethnic elements highlight, and there are many oriental / phrygian themes in this song. Its about the Babylonian deity with the same name. Lastly, “Radical Revolution” aims to be a kind of avant garde symphonic metal opera-like track, that integrates various melodies and ethnic touches along with the usage of male and female choirs that carry the humanitarian, cosmic message of the song. Its concept is about the yuga cycles of the Indian mystics, where our collective awareness as species rises with the passing of the world ages.
· Given the diversity in “Awakenings,” what can listeners expect from InnerversE in future projects? Are there plans to explore new genres or themes?
We are currently promoting our first album with services through the internet. We are also searching for band members to aid us in our journey, which is not an easy task, as each member needs to be at a certain high level of musicianship and also share a similar artistic vision with InnerversE. In our new album we will probably incoporate more vocals in our compositions. As for the musical style, that will be defined when we start recording new songs, but surely the elements of symphonic and progressive will define our sound.
· Reflecting on the journey of creating “Awakenings,” what have been the most rewarding and challenging aspects of bringing this album to life?
We had an amazing journey producing this album along with producer Bob Katsionis. I developed the compositions in my home studio and he added some layers and rhythmic ideas in each song until each one of them was ready for mixing / mastering. It was really fun, as we cooperated flawlessly and it was my first experience releasing an album as well. Recording each compositon was challenging as well, as each song features many elements and intruments from symphonic , choirs and metal instruments. It needed lot’s of hard work and a clear artistic vision on where each of the songs was going. I believe that the final result justifies our hard work and the mixing / mastering is at a top level as well!
