Hi there,
Thanks for your interest in Immortalizer! I’d be happy to answer your questions!
Welcome Dave! How things are going about Immortalizer?
Things are going really well, thank you! I’m currently recording the next single “I’m Gone” so that’s been a lot of fun. It’s a song about toxic relationships which I think a lot of people can relate to.
Are you satisfied about the feedback for your new single “Lemmy”?
I’ve been very pleased with the feedback from the “Lemmy” single! The response so far has been very positive which is super encouraging! The fans definitely help keep me going, there’s no question.
After releasing your new single, are there any plans for a full album in the near future or you find this not essential?
I am currently writing and recording the first full length album! I think it’s really important to have both a digital presence and a physical one. Having something tangible to hold on to is a must for a lot of people, including myself. I love cracking the seal on a new LP or CD and flipping through the booklet inside and seeing pictures and lyrics from my favorite bands. So I want to offer that to my fans as well.
How can you describe your sound?
That’s a good question. I think the best way to describe it is Classic Style Heavy Metal. Contemporary in some ways, but with a vintage feel to it as well.
What are your musical idols?
Oh man! I have so many. But the top 5 would have to be Motörhead, Judas Priest, Saxon, Primal Fear and Megadeth. But there are countless others like Iron Maiden, Metallica & Kiss who have had huge impacts on me as well. Music has always been my whole life, my escape. I’ve been obsessed with it since I was 7 years old, so these legendary musicians were a huge influence on me as a person and as a musician. They literally made up the soundtrack to my whole life!
The video clip for your song “Lemmy” shows a very entertaining side of the band. Tell us a few words and special moments about the shots.
The video was a lot of fun to make. My lady helped me film it. We had to keep it simple due to the current restrictions in Canada, but I still wanted it to be as visually appealing as possible, so I got the artwork for the full length album printed up for the background and we began filming me playing each instrument. The lighting was a bit too strong though, so unless I looked straight ahead I was almost completely blinded by the lights so I could barely see what I was doing, hahaha. All kidding aside, it was great to pay tribute to the legendary Lemmy Kilmister. Gone but never forgotten!
What is your opinion about the use of internet? Is this helpful about the bands or they are just being lost into a sea of information?
The internet has drastically changed the music business, there’s no question. On one hand I was able to reach a huge international audience as an indie artist which prior to the internet would have been next to impossible without a record label. But unfortunately, you are also competing with millions of other bands all around the world and insane amounts of information and content. So getting recognized in that sea of info can be very tricky. As for the internet itself, I do worry about the long term consequences of our global obsession with the internet. Especially younger generations who have never known life without it. However, I think they are also wise enough to know when it becomes too much in their own lives. I hope so anyway.
Any live plans for the band?
Absolutely! Once Covid is over I’m going to start auditions to put a band together and once that’s done, we’ll start playing live shows for sure!
What is your biggest dream about Immortalizer?
My biggest dream would be to get signed to a major metal label and be able to bring Immortalizer to the masses with my other band members for years to come! Touring the world and inspiring fans to follow their dreams just like my music idols did for me!
How did you get started with music? Any special musical studies?
I became fascinated with music at a very young age. When I was 7 years old my father gave me his vinyl collection which had tons of amazing classic Rock albums and early era Metal like Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly and Deep Purple. It was mind blowing for me and I couldn’t get enough. I spent countless hours listening to those records.
My uncle Paul was also a professional drummer in the 80’s and 90’s and I’ve always idolized him. We lived in different cities so we had limited contact, but I loved each and every visit. He encouraged me to learn to play drums and by the age of 9 I knew music was my calling. That’s how it all began. His father, my grandfather was also a gigging musician, so it’s safe to say music runs in the family. I also learned to play each instrument by ear, so I never took lessons, but I did start working with Ralf Scheepers of Primal Fear in 2020 to further develop my vocal abilities.
What do you think about the Canadian rock and metal scene? Are there any new bands that you love?
Canada has a very active metal scene, especially in places like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto, but all over really. I’ve been so focused on Immortalizer I haven’t had as much time as I would like to check them all out. But one band from Montreal called Inepsy is one of my favorites. Their Rock ‘N’ Roll Babylon album is especially killer! I think Metal in Canada is alive and well and we have a lot to offer.
Congrats and good luck about your work, Dave! The last words are yours.
Thank you very much! I really appreciate that! I’d just like to thank each and every one of my fans out there! You all rule! Thank you for keeping Metal alive and remember to always remain true to yourselves. \m/
Sincerely,
Dave D.R.
