Hot Sunday Blood interview
Hot Sunday Blood seems to be an uprising force in the current European alternative/heavy music. You have a brand-new album out! Congratulations for the release!
— Thank you! It’s a milestone for us! We devoted a lot of energy into this and we are very satisfied with the obtained result.
The new album entitled “Kein Licht” is your 3rd full length and it was released less than a month ago. What were the first reactions from the fans and press?
— My mom liked it very much! Lol
We are waiting for the response from magazines, but when we play live the reactions among our fans are very positive.
Why did you choose the German language for the album title? And why do you see “No Light”?
— The choice of the German language was made because we really like how it sounds. As Italians we are acquainted with a neo-latin language and the different sounds of the German pronunciations seemed hard enough to express the negativity and sadness. That brings us to the second part. Kein Licht is also one of the songs of the album, and the concept of having no light really matches with the desperation and absence of choices the protagonist lives…
The album is a concept and it will be completed in 2 parts. Please let us know more about this concept.
— To be honest this is an ongoing process. By now what we have in mind is to express the “lack of something” in different ways, and we really like how it came out in notes with this first part. But the complete picture is far from being on focus. I can say that rather that a pure concept, we have many songs with a common theme, which is the absence of particular and important things in our life.
When is the 2nd part to be expected and what new ideas does it bring to the concept?
— Our plans are to release the second part by the end of 2020, but for sure we will take all the time we need to produce something we are completely satisfied about. As we said earlier, the process is still ongoing but one of the ideas is to enlighten the same themes as seen in different point of view.
What is the Italian rock/metal scene like at the moment?
— Times have changed, as music did. There are less bands out there ready to invest and sacrifice themselves to reach their goals. But we have indeed even in the underground scene some valid acts. Sadly the most common problem are cover bands and the fact that many venues prefers to hire them for a show because they know for sure that many people will show up. It’s a complex problem; the roots are to be found not only in musicians that goes the “easy way” but in the general lowering of the musical culture of people….
Although the core of your music is alternative/heavy rock, a variety of influences is added in. How do you manage to blend everything down to an own style?
— This is a very interesting question and we are very pleased to say that… we don’t manage nothing at all. Things comes out as you listen. We are five people with different tastes and preferences (although we are all rooted in the rock/metal genre). Every one of us brings their own. Songs comes out pretty fast but we get rid of many of them because we agreed to have high quality standards and needs from our productions.
Hot Sunday Blood present a balanced result between melodic and aggressive music themes. Are both of equal importance to you?
— I think this question should be asked separately to all members, but yes, we try to take care of both parts. We always – I mean always – try to sound heavy groove but with melodic vocal lines, something you can listen and repeat.
Do you enjoy more playing in big or small venues and what reactions do you get from your audience at live shows?
— We really have no preferences, we managed to give our best in all the situations. Small venues have the downside that is more difficult to have your sound exploding in your listener’s face, on the other hand is simpler to recreate a more intimate atmosphere.
Your lyrics have a philosophical/psychological approach. On the “New Omega” album there was a song named “Salvation” divided in 4 parts. The new album “Kein Licht” is a 2 part concept. Who writes the lyrics and what’s in your mind when writing?
— Andrea, our singer takes care of the lyrics. This is not a written rule, but he always managed to come out with exceptional works so we are happy this way! He writes about his feelings and thoughts in an unconventional way. Once we start playing he already has a story on his mind.
How often do you rehearse to keep the band in shape?
— We have not a golden rule, in general one or two times a week, but we invest a significant amount of our time in other band’s related activities.
Which 5 are the most important records for Hot Sunday Blood and why?
— We have many! Every one of us has his own. We all have different music backgrounds. So we are going to mention one for each band member…
Andrea (voice): “October Rust” by Type O Negative
Marco (guitar): “Mellon Collie” by Smashing Pumpkins
Andy (guitar): “Mechanical animal” by Marylin Manson
Carlo (drums): ‘King for a day” by Faith no more
Me/Paolo (bass): “Superunknown” by Soundgarden
Which are your next steps?
— We are very busy preparing for the next shows! And in the meantime, we are finishing the next album.
Thank you for the interview and best of luck for the new album! Keep on rocking!
— It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to give and insight of the inners band’s work. Thank you so much!
