The Italian band with the rather weird name Hot Sunday Blood have just released their new album “Kein Licht”.
The title is German for “No Light”.
I was prepared to listen to something dark. And in a way the album is dark on its own terms. Hot Sunday Blood draw influences from genres as alternative rock and modern metal all draped in very emotionally.
The opening track “Habits Abyss” is a very beautiful alternative ballad with acoustic themes similar to folk rock, trumpet and an overall dreamy atmosphere.
“Kein Licht” the same titled song starts off creating an eerie atmosphere, but soon turns heavier reminding of The Smashing Pumpkins especially when screaming vocals are used. The effected guitars sound very much new wave/alternative and are deeply sweet. The song has a grandiose finale.
“No Way Out” is a more straight rock song. Actually it sounds like a stone thrown in your face. The aggressive vocals and rock attitude magnetize the listener. The guitar overtones and heavy riffs create a song that could be played in every rock club. Fans of QOTSA would approve.
“The Long Winter’s Embrace” is the first single of the album. No wonder why. It carries all the HSB ingredients plus has a catchy chorus. This is a sing-along song and deserves loads of beer with it.
The next song “Time Machine” maintains a 90’s alternative romanticism adding to it a bit of modern rock attitude with nice guitar phrases throughout in a surely Alice in Chains / Stone Temple Pilots influenced song!
“40 Steps” closes the album. It is another very beautiful HSB song with memorable vocal lines and cool guitars.
The clear production benefits the band’s songwriting.
HSB are not newcomers in the rock scene. “Kein Licht” is their 3rd full length album already. The album is released from Snooky Records. All songs reveal a band who knows how to rock.
