When the talking comes to the new era of epic heavy metal scene, bands like the Eternal Champion, Visigoth or Black Soul Horde come first in mind, since they are some of the best in the genre. Now, the time has come to think of the Hard Disk Drive, who present themselves officially through their debut album “Immortal Nightmares”.
After a journey through one demo and two EPs, Hard Disk Drive unleash their debut album. And I have to admit that the “Immortal Nightmares” is my first experience with the band. Without hearing their two EPs, their debut hit like a brick wall. I had expectations, but I never expected such a great record of pure epic heavy metal power.
Well, honestly there is not much to say about the record itself. It is simple, straightforward, and pure heavy metal and it is great. Mainly riff based, with guitar riffs of epic proportions and deep vocals that remind of bands like the Candlemass, the “Immortal Nightmares” is the perfect blend of the gritty American heavy metal with the European epic doom metal of melodic and grand riffs.
The “Immortal Nightmares” is the kind of record that would be used as an example to define a new musical era. Is that fresh musical approach that has its base in the tradition of the genre yet it doesn’t sound like a 40 year old music that has lost its spark. Because, if we are honest, the so called traditional heavy metal has a long career and tends more often than not to present some repetitive tendencies, with many records sounding uninspired or poor copy of the greats.
However, there is a new era of heavy metal coming, with great bands offering the cosiness of the familiar heavy metal via a new perspective. And Hard Disk Drive has earned a place in that scene that writes great, fun and enjoyable records, keeping the spark alive. The “Immortal Nightmares” is a killer debut and you would be wise to spare some time to listen to it.
