Gus Drax – Theories of Imperfection
With Theories of Imperfection, Greek guitar virtuoso Gus Drax returns to the forefront of instrumental progressive metal, delivering a record that will ignite the imaginations of shred fanatics and heavy metal devotees alike. The album will be available for your listening pleasure on the 3rd of April by Theogonia Records.
Gus Draxe’s musical ensemble, on this upcoming endeavor, is complete by an exceptional collection of musicians, with George Kollias gracing the drums with each hit and fill, George Charalampidis holding tight and precise the low end and Bob Katsionis on keys duty, taking up the ethereal- spoiler alert- and distinctive soundscapes that set the mood and tone for each track.
Star of the show is the exceptional technique. Each track is defined by precision and elegance in every note played, in every snare hit, in every single detail. Everything is choreographed to perfection, everything is tight to a point that you start to question if that is even humanly possible. And under the spotlight Gus Draxe’s performance is clean in an almost clinical or even surgical way. That clean musical articulation and expressive and emotional even- at times-performance is the reason that the Theories of Imperfection, although complex and a shredding fest, feels very accessible.
Sentio Ergo Sum kickstarts the album, introducing us to the Theories of Imperfection. The distinctive progressive/contemporary metal sound, which by the eighth and final track has become a synonym to the title, is set by the first couple of minutes, stating intent and paving the way on which the rest of the album unravels. The shredding, of which the album expectedly has a lot of, at no point does it becomes tiresome and repetitive. Gus Drax has achieved to keep his playing style and musical expressions fresh in each track, with each one having a surprise hidden to keep things constantly exciting.
Nocturnal Waltz arrives under a dark, ethereal vale, with elegant melodies and the introduction of neo-classical influences, while on the other side of the spectrum the Emotive Resonance, while keeping true to the progressive/contemporary core, presents what it feels like an elevated version of groove metal, with distinct riff work and prominent Dream Theater and, of course, John Petrucci influences.
Fourth is the Ethereal Horizon, one of the most unique songs of the album and dare say my personal favorite. Gus Draxe’s progressive metal sound mixes with ethereal keys and soundscapes, resulting in a contemporary ‘80s AOR sound, followed by a quite hot saxophone solo that underlines the ‘80s atmosphere. Sombrero Attack follows on the heel unleashing a shredding storm, in a spotless exhibition of technique, musicality and sense of melody and clean melodic lines in all that shred fest.
In the sixth track, entitled Final Atonement, the bpm are slower, the atmosphere thicker, and the playing and phrasing becomes more delicate, more emotional, with that Pink Floyd-like texture characterizing sections of the song.
Cosmic Shadow returns to the previous grandeur, the one established already by the opening Sentio Ergo Sum that set the core tone for the whole record. However, the record’s eighth and final song, entitled Everything’s Gonna Be Alright, comes with its own surprise. For his final statement, Gus Drax delivers an absolutely unique sounding track, uplifting an vibrant, that finds balance between the heavier progressive kind of playing and the more carefree one, resulting in what it feels like a very complex, math-rock like song.
