Grande Fox from Thessaloniki, Greece strike back with their 3-track EP “Kulning”.
The opening track “Hermitage” starts in a psychedelic mood. The guitars sound as if hitting effected notes with laziness, but these notes are soon shaped to actual psychedelic riffs. Female vocals add depth to the atmosphere.
When the male vocals hit in the riffage turns heavier. Imagine Soundgarden’s “Down On The Upside” and you have it!
The song is soulful. Its power is enough to move a rock club.
Very nice work on the drums with nice measures and color additions wherever needed. The band is not afraid to experiment with guitar effects as the female vocals take control. Their heavier parts are still my favorite though.
In the song “Kulning” the female vocal performance is closer to folk. The whole song flirts with ethnic music. Some vocals sound as if they’re coming straight from the jungle and I wonder how great would that song be live! With their overall weird songwriting the band achieves their own personal sound.
The last song “Sealed Curse” opens in a Pixies meets Nick Cave mood while the chorus is what I’d call a 90’s alternative/indie hit single chorus. Bands like Puressence and Madrugada surely crossed my mind while listening to the song. In this one Grande Fox even added strings in!
Grande Fox have an own sound that cannot easily be classified.
I would call it psychedelic/alternative/heavy rock. The “Kulning” EP is absolutely enjoyable and makes me anxious for their next release!
