Answered by singer/ guitarist Tomas Skorepa
1) Welcome guys! How things are going about Exorcizphobia?
Hi there! Things are going well, thanks for asking! Despite the current complicated situation, we have a busy schedule. We’ve played for example at Obscene Extreme Festival and Josefstadt by Brutal Assault recently. And our giglist for the summer is not over yet. There are still some crushing events left…
2) Are you satisfied about the first feedback for your new album “Digitotality”?
We haven’t expected so intense feedback to be honest. Even though it wasn‘t possible to support new album by a tour right after release, we achieve to reach wider audience than ever before with ‘Digitotality’ and we are genuinley happy about that! We’ve been trying to improve and pushing it up step by step. Positive feedback for ‘Digitotality’ is a sign that we are on the right way.
3) After releasing your third album you show that you are a really promising and unique thrash band!. Are there any plans for another full album in the near future?
Thanks for kind words, I’m pleased that you feel it this way! We’ve just released an EP called “Friend Of Lunacy” in July. Songs on this EP should be also part of the split album with Costarican band Heresy. Pandemic situation heavily impacted the Label we’ve been working with for the years, so we are searching for somebody else currently. However, some of the new songs are slowly getting the shape and I believe we will have next LP ready for 2022!
4) How can you describe your sound?
Music of Exorcizphobia is influenced by Bay Area and Canadian thrash metal and also by American hardcore punk in general.
We definitely trying to sound different than every other thrash metal band out there. But you can hear a touch of the bands which influenced us. I don’t think it’s possible to avoid it honestly. I mean, seems natural to me to keeping up the essence of an artists you’ve been influenced by, but with your own feeling, spirit, attitude and heart in the mixture.
5) What are your musical idols?
Uff… So many bands and musicians who have inspired me, it’s hard for me to pick just a couple but I’m gonna try it. Let’s mention Black Sabbath, Voivod, D.r.i., High On Fire, Nuclear Assault, St. Vitus, Gang Green, Sacred Reich, Poison Idea, Type O Negative, Rollins Band or Mastodon. To name a few particular musicians, I feel influenced by Denis ‘Piggy’ D’Amour, Jeff Waters, Matt Pike, Lemmy Kilmister or Paul McCartney.
6) Tell us a few words and special moments about the recordings of your stuff.
Album was recorded at Davos Studio in August 2020, produced by me and Jindrich ‘Otyn’ Tomanek. It was our second session in Davos and I just can’t say anything bad. I really enjoyed it and cooperation with Otyn was fun and effective as before.
Recording took three days and post production was done about a month after the session.
Everything went suspiciously well.
Special moments? I can’t recall any… Just hard work – blood, sweat and tears, you know. No fun, alcohol, drugs… anything like that… wink-wink
7) What is your opinion about the use of internet? Is this helpful about the bands or they are just being lost into a sea of information?
Double-edged sword… Internet is great about spreading your music out. You can also get the contacts much easier and being in touch with your fans and such. But on the other hand, it’s not easy to get attention. There is so many interesting artists and bands nowadays…
Internet is amazing tool with great potential to simplify the stuff in general. However, I’m a bit old-fashioned. Nothing digital can replace a live show, listening the vinyl, chat with your friends in the pub or on the concert…
8) Any live plans for the band?
As I’m saying above, despite the current complicated situation, we have busy schedule. Since it’s possible to play live again in Czechia (approx half of June), we had twelve shows and Fall is pretty heavily booked as well. We would love to do some tour as soon as possible and bring our music to the foreign audience. Let’s hope that situation will allow it soon.
9) What is your biggest dream about Exorcizphobia?
Well, I just wish to keep the thrill up! We’ve genuinely enjoying what we do and that’s most important aspect of the whole thing, I guess. With this enthusiasm and energy on the board, I’m sure another cool music and memorable live shows will follow.
10) How did you get started with music? Any special musical studies?
I had a musical bug since I was little. First important band for me were The Beatles. I could be like eleven years old and I was crazy about them. Not long after I started to skate and it helped me to discover various styles of music. I was in hip hop, in electronic for the while, but then I started to pay more attention about music my dad used to listen. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Accept, Ozzy Osbourne and mainly Metallica. So as many others would say too, Metallica was the reason I started to play guitar. I was about thirteen years old when I started.
As far as I know, nobody in the band has formal musical education. Not even any official lessons taken or so. Just a bunch of enthusiastic music fanatics…
11) What do you think about the Czechian metal scene? Are there any new bands that you love?
I dig Czech metal scene, that’s for sure! There aren’t too many names well-known worldwide, but it worth to spare few minutes of your time and check out what’s up over here!
As for some fresh and promising stuff I would recommend you old school death metallers SNĚŤ with their crushing album ‘Mokvání V Okovech‘ (https://snet.bandcamp.com/album/mokv-n-v-okovech). You should also pay attention to young thrashers FAÜST. They just working on new album and it’s going to be rad, trust me.
(https://faustxthrashingdoom.bandcamp.com/). If you guys like first records of CARCASS and alike, this new band called SICK SINUS SYNDROME founded by czech metal legends is a real deal for you! (https://sicksinussyndrome.bandcamp.com/album/rotten-to-the-core).
12) Congrats and good luck about your work, guys! The last words are yours.
