Elysium is a band that explores the boundaries of Symphonic/Gothic/Folk Metal. After the “Symphony of a Forest” EP that was released in 2015, the Italians strike back with their first full length album “Labyrinth of Fallen Angels”.
Their musical approach lies between classic rock/progressive bands like Queen and Genesis up to symphonic metal bands like Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil. However, the metal sound of the band is enhanced with classical orchestrations/ arrangements which add to the power and prose of the whole album giving it a theatrical dimension at times.
Despite the use of instruments from the classical orchestra like violin, alongside the typical rock orchestra instruments, Elysiun don’t fear to experiment with electronics in the final production to make the result more fresh and modern.
Daphne’s vocals is an asset for Elysium. This talented female vocalist brings power to the songs in a perfect mix with emotion. She is confident and delivers quality vocals upgrading the songs.
The songwriting itself carries something from the opera/classical music tradition of Italy, uses metal music as the basis with nice riffs and rhythm section work and features modern touches.
There is no point in picking “standout” songs here because the album should be seen as a whole experience. Nevertheless, if I were to just pick one, I’d say that the catchy melodic work of “Before the End” cannot be surpassed.
To me, Elysium can be “the next big thing” in symphonic metal. They are excellent musicians, they write great songs and they have a strong musical education and skills (both can be seen and heard throughout the album). “Labyrinth of Fallen Angels” is an excellent album and fans of the combination of metal and classical music will surely embrace it. I can see that fans of bands like Within Temptation, Lacuna Coil, (later) Anathema and (later) Therion will be the first to dive in this little gem!
