Elkapath is a Gothic Metal Band hailing from United Kingdom, active since 2019, that is about to release its debut album, “Black Spiders”, on October 31. The album was recorded by Bob Katsionis, and with the introductions over, let’s get straight to the matter at hand.
Elkapath has exceeded in the marketing department and this is an absolut compliment. The idea of releasing the album, a gothic album, in October 31th, it makes everything more intriguing. And it worked. Not only for me who prepared me for something dark and spooky, but for the album itself. Without ever listening to a single note, you expect darkish vibes and your expectations are surely met.
Before we get to the musical aspect of the album, I’ll allow myself to stay a bit more on the overall image of the record and discuss the artwork. Have a look at it, and you instantly get my point of the whole successful presentation. A beautiful artwork in black and purple, with a few lines of blood red, is the visual representation of the sound that we’ll soon talk about. The human-like doll that you know is up to no good, dressed in gothic fashion, with its minions that remind of the artwork of the “Issues” from Korn, compose the spooky visual aspect fitting for a Halloween album.
The Elkapath, although they identify as a Gothic Metal Band, they do no justice to themselves and their sound. I understand that it helps to be placed under a specific genre, but the “Black Spiders” contains a large variety of inspirations. Elkapath place their feet in the gothic culture yet they rise above it, incorporating in their sound different music genres and drawing inspiration from bands like The Prodigy, Korn, Nine Inch Nails and even Misfits.
Elkapath’s musical diversity is getting noticed by the first song of the album, “Creepy Little Dolls” that has a strong horror punk vibe in its sound. In the track “Black Spiders” the black album elements come on the surface, while in the “Dirty Whore Mouth”, the band presents the nu metal sound with a gothic twist. However, the most unique track is the “Shields of Protection”, with a beautiful folkish melody that blends with the general gothic atmosphere of the album.
Concluding, there is not much left to say other than that the “Black Spiders” is a really good debut album, filled with fresh and creative ideas and a successful blend of the gothic aesthetic with many different music genres. The album is to be released on October 31th, so you know what you have to do on the day of Halloween.
