EL COLOSSO – their new album “FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS” is out now via bandcamp #elcolosso

The last year has been the roughest in a generation, and although the lyrics and music were all written pre-pandemic, with the benefit of hindsight so much of the content of FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS seems near prophetic. Politics has devolved into bare faced lies and division. Socially our society has been divided into with-us-or-against-us mindsets that react against reason and empathy. As so many react against science, we are in danger of losing our humanity.

Although FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS is not a concept album per se, there are common themes throughout: warnings, anger, frustration, rebellion – all relating to the way we treat each other, and the way that nefarious powers seek to treat us.

The album, though, does not dwell on the sombre or outright impotent rage of so much other heavy rock genres – there is also humour, love and hope. Otherwise, what’s the point? A protest song can just as effectively also be a love song, at least in the EL COLOSSO universe.

FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS is a work we are all immensely proud of. We have been able to approach this project with the truest form of the DIY philosophy. With the tracking masterfully recorded by Richard Stolz at Woodstock Studios in Melbourne – just before Australia’s lockdown episodes – with vocals and other overdubs being recorded at home studios, being mixed by Alex Hayes and the rest of the band via online, real-time sessions, this record is very much an honest and bold example of what EL COLOSSO can achieve. We’re less interested in genres and more interested in producing art that pleases first ourselves, and then you, the music fan.
