Dreamlord have returned. Or they will be returning with their newest musical endeavor, entitled “Artificial Imprisonment”, on September 12th. Six years have passed from their previous, and debut, album, and the Greek thrashers are ready to unleash a work that not only draws inspiration heavily from the current state of the world, but is mainly influenced by and focused around the impact the A.I has been having in our lives.
Dreamlord introduce their work with the title that plays around with the initials of A.I, twisting the meaning and giving a first taste of what the album will be about. Usually such clarifications are not that important, but considering that the “Artificial Imprisonment” feels like a concept work, it really did help me immerse into the work’s theme. A clever wordplay is always appreciated, at least in my case, and admittedly a catchy title can draw your attention and it’s a detail that sticks and helps to make the work memorable to the listener.
Now the introduction has been made, and my appreciation for the title has been expressed, let’s get to the matter at hand. Dreamlord have truly captured the essence of our times into a thrash metal work contemporary, without sacrificing any of the old-school elements that we, meatheads, tend to cling and often feel nostalgic for, while at the same time they deliver a sound fresh and in your face, with all the proper aggression that befits a thrash metal work.
Opening with the “Artificial Imprisonment”, Dreamlord deliver a clean, not too gritty but gritty enough thrash metal powerhouse that does its job perfectly as the album’s introductory track. Influenced by the American school of thrash, the record’s first minutes are all that it takes for the listener to get hooked and invested in their work.
The “Kill the Serpent” follows up, throwing more oil into the fire, with an old-school in your face sound, and a significantly more ominous vibe, that veils the song once the tempo drops. The bass solo, admittedly, takes the spotlight, and not because I didn’t’ really expected it, but because Dreamlord have delivered a killer tone cuts through in each song, adding that bit of extra clangy, “barbed wire” texture.
Follow up with “No Room for the Dead”, Dreamlord take a slight turn, bringing on the foreground a groovier sounding thrash, with stomp-sounding riffs, as a result of the tighter, in terms of groove, ideas. “Against Control” follows in the same path, differentiating with its heavy metal undertones “lurking” beneath the thrash influences that do take the lion’s share.
The heavy metal influences are even more visible in the “Global Decay”, mixed with speed metal ideas and the explosive thrash core, resulting in an absolute pit-opener for the band’s live performances. We are talking thrash-mania with Slayer vibes fused-in, creating a hellish result that I absolutely adored.
Two tracks before the album’s finale, comes the “Evil Twin” in a, excuse my expression, upbeat tone, with some crossover ideas thrown in the mix, adding that bit of extra flare and punkish attitude. “No Way Out” is the seventh track, a darker song, full on attack thrash sound, with great lead-guitar work, maybe my personal favorite in the record. That’s completely objective, but I was blown since we are song before the great finale and Dreamlord still pushing on, cutting nothing back.
Last but not least, “This War of Mine” completes the “Artificial Imprisonment”. Completing the circle, the album ends as it started with a thunderous song, powerful, fast-paced and all in all just the right choice to close an album that never slowed down and never cut anything back. Dreamlord deliver whatever we could have wished for and asked from a thrash metal work. They unleash a work that keeps the listener on their toes from start to finish and engaged until the very last note of the “Artificial Imprisonment”.
