Drama Noir is a very promising symphonic black/death metal band from Greece. Paul, you are the main man of Drama Noir. How did you decide to form the band and what did you want to express?
I always wanted to form my own band and play my own music. I wanted to do it since I was a lot younger but I didn’t have the means or the time needed due to other obligations. I wanted to express personal feelings and thoughts and in a way fight all those who try to force their beliefs and way of lives to us.
Your debut full length “Princess Airam” was very well received in the underground. Which do you think were the reasons for its success?
Yes indeed it was very well received! To be honest, we didn’t even think that it would be like that. We had the music, we entered the studio and we did what we love, which is playing metal. If you love what you do, everything is awesome.
Have you played live shows in support of “Princess Airam”? What was the people’s response and how do you feel on stage?
So far we have played only one live show, along with the veterans Selefice and Piranha. The response was pretty good. People seemed to enjoy watching us. As for how we feel on stage, we can safely say that it feels like home.
You have been involved in underground bands like Disharmony and Gungnir. Please let us know more.
Disharmony was the first band I played and composed music for. They helped me to find out my way of building a song and of course how to record properly as I knew nothing regarding recordings and studios. I gained a lot of things and I owe a lot to this band. In Gungnir, I am a session member only for live shows.
Back to the “Princess Airam” album. Why did you choose to independently release it?
We chose to release it ourselves as we didn’t have any contacts for labels and the few we had, were either fully booked or they were not interested.
You guys have some line up changes. Nyctelios (also in the blacksters Synteleia) has joined the ranks of Drama Noir. What were the reasons?
Our session vocalist/guitarist had many obligations with his job and his own bands so he couldn’t keep up. Nyctelios is a friend and out drummer Nick is the Synteleia’s session drummer, so it wasn’t long until he joined. The most important thing though, was that he liked Drama Noir’s music.
Are you the sole composer and lyricist of the band or do the other members contribute too?
The lyrics so far were written by me, but with Nyctelios in the band, it is his job now. I write all the music but all ideas are more than welcome.
A question for guitar players. Which guitars suit your style best and why? Do you use additional effects?
I use Solar, Ibanez and Gibson guitars. I believe that Solar suits me the most, in addition to my amplifier (Warp). I play with low tunings so it gives me the the power I need. Regarding the effects, I only use a delay for my solos and a reverb for the clean parts.
Is there an active scene in your hometown of Korinthos and do you guys rehearse in your city or have to travel?
Yes we have an active scene in Korinthos. We have Rejection, 1000mods and of course Extremity Obsession with whom George Kollias used to play. We are rehearsing in Athens, because for Nick and Nyctelios is not easy to travel to Korinthos. It is about an hour from Korinthos to Athens, so it is not something hard to do.
Are the soprano vocals an essential ingredient for Drama Noir music? Do you plan to use them again in the future?
No it is not something that we cannot live without. Surely that kind of vocals created a very special atmosphere for our first album, but in the new one, there will not be any. With that being said, we never say never to what the future holds for us.
What are you next plans for Drama Noir? When should we expect new material? Do you have any new songs/titles you can give us?
At the moment our sole purpose is to release the second album and after that play as many shows as possible. We want to believe that we will have the album released after the summer. No titles yet but we are working on it along with the lyrics.
Thank you Paul for the interview and good luck to the very promising Drama Noir! The last words are yours.
Thank you very much for this interview, it means a lot us to have the support of zines and radio stations. Stay tuned with us, because nice things are going to happen in the near future.
