DISILLUSIVE PLAY (Progressive Metal – Greece) – ALBUM REVIEW – άλμπουμ “Songs for the Non-Existent” (2023 Wormholedeath Records) via Angels PR Worldwide Music Promotion #DisillusivePlay
Disillusive Play – “Songs For The Non-Existent”
There is no doubt. The sophomore work of Disillusive Play, entitled “Songs For The Non-Existent”, is quite the interesting and notable release. I had no idea what should I expect in terms of music and sound, since this is my first contact with the band. Needless to say how pleasantly surprised I was after a couple of minutes into the album, when I started to get the hang of it.
Disillusive Play have found a magic formula, a way to traverse through the genres and the different influences, and to present a coherent result that although it does not fall under any particular genre, still makes perfect sense. There are no issues of lack of coherency between the songs and the ideas, since all the transitions are incredibly smooth, with the Disillusive Play being able to cross effortlessly from the hard rock oriented sound to progressive and even power metal inspired territories.
And that’s the very thing that is making the “Songs For The Non-Existent” such a great and captivating release, that variety of ideas and that range that goes from hard rock to progressive and symphonic. Well, at least they claim that they aim for a hard rock sound, since while I was listening to the album I found the focus being turned to heavier territories. For example, the songs “Parallel Lives” and “Sisyphus” clearly show the band’s love for the progressive/power fused sound, with the powerful choruses, the bright, melodic keys and the fast-paced, heavier riffing. Particularly, the track “Parallel Lives” stands out for its great vocal duet featuring the singer of The Silent Wedding.
On the other hand, songs like the “Queen of The Night” and the “Demon’s Gloves” are the epitome of the fun, vibrant hard rock sound. With some Europower undertones that add to the vibrant feeling, the “Queen of the Night” stands out firstly for its insane, slap, funk-inspired bass line courtesy of Panagiotis Bourazanis, and secondly for its uplifting, tailored for live performances chorus. The “Demon’s Glove” offers a different twist on the hard rock approach, mixing the hard rock sound with some gothic ideas, giving it a darkish tone, while keeping the vibrant vibe intact.
Concluding, the “Songs For The Non-Existent” is quite the impeccable release. With a variety of different ideas, excellent musicianship and exciting tunes and ideas, the Disillusive Play have released an album that you must definitely need to check out.
