This is a fact, Desert Near The End are one of the most consistent bands of the power metal scene. Once more, like four times before, the Desert Near The End have managed to release a record that stands out as a beckon of hope for the power metal. Five records have been released so far, and not once have they lost footing or perspective. Constantly pushing their sound to new limits while growing and developing musically, the Desert Near The End are one of the band that proves that there is saving for the power metal scene.
Lyrically, the “The Dawning of the Son” is based on the first trilogy of the “The Red Rising Saga” by Pierce Brown. In a colonized Mars, a caste system of oppression is established. After the death of a loved one, a brutal ascension through the ranks of the powerful follows, resulting in a revolution that tears the world apart and bloods the soil of Mars.
Without a doubt, their fifth release is their most mature one and shows and proves the aforementioned development and growth. The Desert Near The End have “grown” musically by full digesting and taming their influences, presenting a work that is the most Desert Near The End so far. The thrash elements are still there, but now they seem to own this aspect of their music as well, forming a sound that is distinct from their previous thrash inspired one, as well as distinctive. Crushing, fast riffs with bite, memorable melodic lead guitar lines, shredding solos and amazing drum work that manages to add musicality to the killer blast beats form a captivating power/thrash metal experience. While this release has gone down into a more melodic path in comparison to the previous ones, the band proves that can be more melodic while keeping its signature aggression and thundering spirit intact.
Once more, the Desert Near The End exceed expectations. I want to say that since it is their most mature work it is also their best, but it’s hard for me to compare the “The Dawning of the Son” with its predecessors. Each release has its own style and each one represents the current state of the band. So, let’s focus on the one common trace that every album shares and it is the fact that they rule. And since this one is no exception, I definitely recommend it and suggest not to be missed.
