The underground today seems like moving faster than in the few previous years. It seems like it’s growing every single day and unavoidably bands that are great escape our attention. This means that the underground is getting more underground! Is this really happening in the age of the internet? Well, yes!
The Greek band Desert Near The End is a perfect example. They exist 10 years and they have already released 4 albums, with “Of Fire and Stars” being the latest of them, but I had never heard of them. My bad. Here’s why.
Their power/thrash metal is full of energy and feeling. The core of their music is heavy and thrash riffs with energy and fantasy. The band adds acoustic parts in their songs to give them more feeling.
The vocals are very good for the genre and the band has done a great job in the songwriting and production of the album.
Songs like “A World Beyond”, “The Call of the Stars” and “Across the Desert” show Desert Near the End have the ability to write a good song. My top moment of the album is “Throne of Martyrdom”. I think this song summarizes everything the album is about. It’s dark and heavy with the right amount of speed and the right feeling.
The band is fond of the space thematology and universal mysteries. Expect not a Nocturnus approach, but an approach of secrecy, mystery and the future in the way maybe their co-patriots Sacral Rage also do.
Desert Near the End seem to have many things to offer and they prove that the underground is strong and that Greece is not only a black metal producing country.
