DEATHCRAEFT – “On Human Devolution”…(27th July 2020 , self-release)
Technical Death/Thrash with tech/prog performance and a few black/symphonic metal touches, plus a very interesting interpretation of the Lovecraftian Chthulhu Mythos is what Deathcraeft from Greece present in their debut full length album “On Human Devolution”.
The album includes 8 original songs, and the Greeks seem to have studied very carefully the style they propose. They offer very well-worked songs of pure power and energy, using a clever songwriting and their undoubted technical skills.
The band seems to have absolutely no problem to move between different metal styles. In the “Beginning Of The End” they use black metal elements making them fit in their personal style.
“Spreading Lies” is the first single of the album. A definitely great song which opens in a rather symphonic metal way just to continue with pure teutonic German thrash riffs. The rhythm section is super heavy and the vocals are brutal. The synth work is also amazing. I think fans of Bal Sagoth or Dimmu Borgir and old thrash metal will surely dig this.
An excellent thrash/black song is also “Welcome To Oblivion”. This song has another noteworthy symphonic opening.
“Daydreaming In The Abyss” features the atmosphere I love in mid tempo Slayer songs. Definitely a favorite for me. The guitar tone of the song, as pretty much of the whole album, is fantastic.
The H.P. Lovecraft “Cthulhu Mythos” is used by Deathcraeft in a way which reflects the power of this Mythos to modern society. A very fresh and interesting way to visit the Lovecraftian world indeed.
Peter In de Betou (Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy, Dark Funeral) is behind the mastering of “On Human Devolution”, so nothing could go wrong. The dynamics you get are great. The atmosphere is there. The feeling is there. Everything you need to enter the Deathcraeft world is there.
Deathcraeft’s sound is very much old school. It includes thrash, death and some black metal elements, nice orchestrations and a personal songwriting. Everything is wrapped up in a well-working production. I believe that fans of Morbid Angel and (early) Death, but also fans of thrash metal bands like Forbidden, Testament and Slayer (especially in their mid tempo songs), will like “On Human Devolution”. Be sure to check this out!
