DEATH ANGEL is one of the bands that go way back to the roots of the Bay Area Thrash scene. Ok, not in the Big Four but damn close. The band has had a storied history, a 10 year lay off(from 1991-2001), line up changes, but they are still making some kick ass music! I REALLY enjoyed THE EVIL DIVIDE released in 2016, so I was curious of how they’d follow that up. So a special thanks to Austin Griswold at Secret Service Publicity for getting me the album in advance for this review.
Now, I KNOW there are fans of the band that want it to be 1980-whatever all over again, but that is just not realistic. This band has had to evolve over the years but to my ears, they are still producing quality metal. Speaking of producing, for the 4th album in a row the band has tapped Jason Suecof (DEICIDE, TRIVIUM) of Audiohammer studios, and the mastering of the legend Ted Jensen (SLIPKNOT, PANTERA) of Sterling Sound. Why change it up if the band feels it works? …and it does! The sound on the album is killer, very loud and the mix has everything up and in your face. OK old schoolers, I get it, this is a much different band personel-wise from the old days but I say give this album a fair chance and you might like it more than you think. The title track(video above) HUMANICIDE opens the album and you can hear and feel the energy from the band! The MOTORHEAD-ish intro and riff to I CAME FOR BLOOD is full of speed and power!
The above song THE PACK is what the band has, a pack mentality and good for them! Keep fighting that metal fight, I am really into this album. For me, DEATH ANGEL is really on a roll. This another quality release from an old school band. The names and faces may have changed from the very beginning but the theme remains the same – bone crushing metal!!! Here’s the track listing for the album —
1. | “Humanicide” | 5:42 |
2. | “Divine Defector” | 3:24 |
3. | “Aggressor” | 5:11 |
4. | “I Came for Blood” | 3:12 |
5. | “Immortal Behated” | 6:08 |
6. | “Alive and Screaming” | 3:36 |
7. | “The Pack” | 3:33 |
8. | “Ghost of Me” | 4:34 |
9. | “Revelation Song” | 5:33 |
10. | “Of Rats and Men” | 4:08 |
11. | “The Day I Walked Away” (bonus track) | 3:29 |
It’s pretty much a stacked album, not a bad or weak track here. I really liked all of this album, especially AGGRESSOR, GHOST OF ME, ALIVE AND SCREAMING, & DIVINE DEFECTOR plus the ones I mentioned above. DEATH ANGEL are still alive and kickin’ ass….’nuff said!
